I want to speak something about arcana. You should know all these things. What is arcana? What is sevā? And how should you do these things? And what should we feel when we are doing arcana, or sevā, or kīrtana, or doing mantra-japa? Everything that we are practicing now, all are very philosophical. These are all on the very basis of philosophical things and they are also connected with love and affection. Gradually they will take us to Vraja. Why are we doing all these sadhanas? Why? There should be a motive for all these things. I don’t remember where I told…
Śrīla Gurudeva: No, here, in Houston, I said that at first we have to see what are our goal is. What is our goal? Not we’ll have to think, “What is our sādhana?” If you are thinking that we must learn sādhana and do sādhana, then this is ignorance. There should be an aim and object of our life and also an aim and object of our sādhana, our bhajana. First there is that goal. What is our goal? Then sādhana will come. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta, in the dialogue of Śrīla Rāya Rāmānanda and Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and also we see in Caitanya-caritāmṛta everywhere, everywhere, in Sanātana śikṣā, in Rūpa śikṣā, we see these things. Why does Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī explain? Why has he explained the highest, highest thing, in Adi 4. That is, kṛṣṇa-prema prayojana, Kṛṣṇa sambhanda, abhideya, bhakti abhideya, and sādhya? That is, what is prayojana? Prayojana means? What is the meaning of prayojana?
Devotees: Ultimate goal.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Ultimate goal. So, nothing about sadhana has been told here in Caitanya-caritāmṛta, nothing is told there. But he is telling what is the prema of Śrīmatī Rādhikā to Kṛṣṇa. He has begun from the third chapter, Adi 3, and he especially explains it in Adi 4. Why did Caitanya Mahāprabhu come? What was His goal? Then he is telling, yadā yadā hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharatah. This is one reason, but it is not superior, and it is external. And then, anarpita ciram cirat, something internal, but it is also not prominent. And then he’s telling that Advaita Acarya called Him with Tulasī and Gaṅgā jal, but this is also not prominent. What is prominent? Then he is telling:
śrī-rādhāyāḥ praṇaya-mahimā kīdṛśo vānayaivā-
svādyo yenādbhuta-madhurimā kīdṛśo vā madīyaḥ
saukhyaṁ cāsyā mad-anubhavataḥ kīdṛśaṁ veti lobhāt
tad-bhāvāḍhyaḥ samajani śacī-garbha-sindhau harīnduḥ
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Ādi-līlā 1.6)
[How great is the deeply intense love (praṇaya) of Śrī Rādhā? What is the nature of My astonishing sweetness, which She alone relishes? And what special kind of happiness does She experience on tasting My sweetness?” A greed to taste these three things arose within the heart of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and to fulfill that intense desire, He took birth from the womb of Śrī Śacīmātā like the moon appearing from the ocean.]
When Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes in Dvapara-yuga ended, He went to Goloka Vṛndāvana. Pastimes are always there, but Yogamāyā has no connection with this world and to Kṛṣṇa. That is why we cannot see and we cannot realize what is going on at this time in this Vṛndāvana, but both are the same. He is thinking that, “I know that Śrīmatī Rādhikā is My guru. Her affection is My guru and She loves Me more than I love Her. I don’t know Her mood. I see Śrīmatī Rādhikā, but I don’t become mad. But when She sees me, She becomes mad.”
How is anything tasted if there is any quality? Śrīmatī Rādhikā has mahābhāva and more than that. Kṛṣṇa does not have that thing, He has mahābhāva of another kind. He is the object, but Śrīmatī Rādhikā is the observer. So the object cannot have the mood of the observer. So what is Rādhikā’s mood?
śrī-rādhāyāḥ praṇaya-mahimā, what is called praṇaya? If praṇaya is there, then we can taste Kṛṣṇa, otherwise not. So we are not tasting. We have no realization of praṇaya, and what to tell of praṇaya, we have no actual śraddhā, bona-fide śraddhā, so how can we taste? We have moods of tasting worldly things, desires, lust and all other things. But we have no śraddhā at all, very little, little śraddhā. And this śraddhā is not bona-fide, it can turn, it can be upset.
So, śrī-rādhāyāḥ praṇaya-mahimā. Sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga, these things. So Kṛṣṇa is thinking that, “This thing is not in Me, this quality. How can I taste Myself?” He is telling a very good thing if you go very deep. Kṛṣṇa is telling that, “I am beautiful, but Śrīmatī Rādhikā is more beautiful. And quality, I have so much quality, but Rādhikā has so much more qualities. I have prema, love, but She has more and more prema. But there is one thing, I have a special thing in Myself that Śrīmatī Rādhikā does not have. What is that? (unclear, 11:43-11:47), but that thing only Rādhikā can know. Because if She sees Me, She becomes mad. I see that this quality is not in Śrīmatī Rādhikā. I cannot be mad, but She becomes mad. There is something in Me that makes Śrīmatī Rādhikā mad.” Understand this?
Śrīla Gurudeva: So, “But I cannot define it, I cannot realize this. What is that? I want to know this. What thing is especially in Me that makes Śrīmatī Rādhikā and all gopīs, father and mother, everyone, mad? What is this in Me?”
There are very good things in Caitanya-caritāmṛta. A very few number, I think that in the whole world, very few persons can explain or realize all these things, what Caitanya-caritāmṛta has. Nobody tries to penetrate and go very deeply to think all this; they have no time at all. (inaudible). Oh, we should try to go…and it can be had only in the association of high-class Vaisnava
yāha bhāgavata paḍa vaiṣṇavera sthāne
ekānta āśraya kara caitanya-caraṇe
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā 5.131
[If you want to understand Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, you must approach a self-realized Vaiṣṇava and hear from him. You can do this when you have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.]
You should read Bhāgavatam under guidance of a high-class Vaiṣṇava. There are two kinds of bhāgavata. Grantha-bhāgavata and bhakta-bhāgavata. So you’ll have to hear everything in the Śrīmad Bhavagatam, the book bhāgavata, but it is under lock and key. Only a bhakta-bhāgavata can open and he can read. So you should go to them. In school, colleges, and the philosophy in colleges, there we cannot have this. But now we think that, “We should go to colleges and we can read there.” The gnostic persons, they have no knowledge, they do not have any practice for these things. How can they teach us? They cannot. So yaha bhāgavata parā vaishanva sthāne.
So, Kṛṣṇa is telling that, “Although I am so beautiful, Rādhikā is more beautiful. Although I have so much knowledge, Rādhikā has more knowledge. In all ways, She is my guru, Rādhikā. But even I have something that is not anywhere. So the thing that Śrīmatī Rādhikā tastes in Me, what is that? Veṇu-mādhurī, rūpa-mādhurī, guṇa mādhurī, līlā mādhurī, I want to taste this. When I see Myself in a mirror or whatever or anywhere, I will become mad. I want to taste like Śrīmatī Rādhikā tastes Me.”
So what is that thing? If Rādhikā’s mood is not there, I cannot taste. So what is that? And when She tastes, what kind of happiness comes to Her? Though She does not want any happiness, nothing, but yet happiness comes, lakhs and lakhs times more. So I want to taste Myself. What are these mādhurī? What is Rādhikā’s praṇaya? And what is that happiness that Śrīmatī Rādhikā tastes?” Then He became Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
It means that Rādhikā prema is the goal of life, our whole practice in bhakti. And it has been told by Śrīla Rāya Ramananda to Caitanya Mahāprabhu in that dialogue. So kṛṣṇa-prema is prayojana, not Kṛṣṇa, not Rādhikā, not anyone. They are not prayojana, they are our isthadeva. But we want prema. If we don’t want prema, if we don’t know what prema is, then there is no motive. No sādhana at all. If we want some rupees, some dollars, we’ll have to serve anywhere, and we can have that. If we want to be any scientist, we will have to go to that college. If you want to be doctor, you’ll have to go to a medical college. If you want to be a lawyer, then you’ll have to go to a law college. In any college, the experts can teach us. So we’ll have to go. This is sādhana. We’ll have to go to these experts, and what they tell us, we will have to follow.
The main object of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was to taste that prema and to preach rāga-mārga bhakti. Rāga-mārga bhakti and rāgātmika-bhakti are not one. Understand? Try to understand. The way and the goal is not same thing. By a way, we can go to our goal. So rāgānugā marga, rāgānugā is a way. By this way, if we will follow that way, we can go to rāgātmika-bhakti. What is rāgātmika? The mood and the services of gopa, gopīs, Nanda Bābā, Yaśodā, Subala, Śrīdhāma, and the gopīs services to Kṛṣṇa, these are rāgātmika. There is rāga in their ātmā, in their soul. So this is rāgātmika. This is our goal.
How to go there? There is sādhana. If you know something about this, and there is a greed, that, “I want that goal, to achieve that goal,” and you are going to the experts who are very expert in these things…they are called rāgānugā, or rūpānuga Vaiṣṇavas, in the line of Rūpa Gosvāmī… If a very little greed is there, that, “I want to serve Kṛṣṇa like Subala, like Nanda Yosoda, or like the gopīs. I want, but there is nothing. I want only that thing.” If you have some greed, then you’ll have to follow rāgānugā. And if you do not have greed and you are hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Caitanya-caritāmṛta, or other books, and you know that there is birth and death, endless birth and death, and sorrow and suffering in this world… By money, by anything in this world we cannot attain that thing, we cannot attain. No happiness of life will come by any of these things. The highest thing in this world is Indra. We cannot be like Indra, but we see that sorrow and suffering…he is always in sorrow and suffering. So many worldly desires; he often goes to ladies, like Gautama’s wife. Like here and there, he has so much anger, lust, and so many things. Sometimes he goes to Māna sarovara and stays in the…
Devotee: Stem of a kamala, lotus.
Śrīla Gurudeva: He goes there and demons are searching for him and for lakhs and lakhs years he went there, he was there. So no one is happy in this world and cannot be by achieving all these things, worldly desires. So money cannot help so much. But if he has seen that so many miseries are in this world and then he thinks that, “How to cross these miseries? How to cross?”, then he will have to follow vaidhi-bhakti.
What is bhakti? To follow and to practice?
anyābhilāṣitā śūnyaṁ jñāna-kārmādy anāvṛtam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā
Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, Pūrva-vibhāga 1.1.11
[The cultivation of activities which are meant exclusively for the pleasure of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, or in other words, the uninterrupted flow of service to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, performed through all endeavors of the body, mind and speech, and through the expressions of various spiritual sentiments (bhāvas), which is not covered by jñāna (knowledge aimed at impersonal liberation) and karma (reward-seeking activity), and which is devoid of all desires other than the aspiration to bring happiness to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is called uttamā-bhakti, pure devotional service.]
This is bhakti. This is rāgānugā, this is the highest, from top to bottom. Everything that is in this verse we’ll have to follow. This uttamā-bhakti is only in Vraja, not anywhere else. It is partly in Vaikuṇṭha, some part is in Ayodhyā, and some more parts are in Dvārakā, but it is purnam…what is purnam?
Devotees: Complete. Most complete.
Śrīla Gurudeva: In Vraja. And in, especially in gopīs. It is not anywhere else. So, I will try to explain this śloka. It will take one hour, at least one hour. So bhakti here is our goal. It is of three kinds. Bhakti is of three kinds: sādhana-bhakti, bhāva-bhakti, and prema-bhakti. Prema-bhakti is not sādhana-bhakti. Bhāva-bhakti is not sādhana-bhakti. Sādhana-bhakti means? From a very long distance, if we want to serve Kṛṣṇa, then we’ll have to follow sādhana-bhakti. If you have greed, then you will at once come up onto the stage of āsakti or ruci. And if you have nothing, no previous impression or anything, then you will have to go… And if there is sukriti, a bhakta will be there and by their association, you will do first guru kāraṇa and some activities from very far away. So that is called sevā, and when we are learning the ABCDs, then like the ABCDs, this is arcana.
What is arcana? It is sevā pūjā, we know that. Service to Kṛṣṇa. But He is very far away, we are nothing here. Guru is saying that, “Ganta bhajao, ring the bell, and give water to Kṛṣṇa.” What is the use of ganta bajau? What is the service? Ganta bhajao, sankha bajau, what is the service? Do you understand me? What is the use? And you will do like this for one hour, two hours. And all the others will come and they will be tired and they will return again. What is the use?
Why this arcana? Arcana doing, doing, if any bona-fide guru will come and we will hear him, then from this arcana we can advance in sevā. We don’t know the meanings, why you should give this light, why you should śāṅkha bhajao, blow the conches, why you do ganta, ringing of the bell. Kṛṣṇa is not there, but we are doing these things. If you enter Thakurji’s room, then you’ll have to do like this [Gurudeva claps], “we are loud, we are coming.” Why are there all these things? We should know.
I’ve given some outlines. First there should be an āsana. Why should there be an āsana? Because we have no suddhi at all, we have no pureness. What is that thing? It is…I have told that:
oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ sadā paśyanti sūrayo
divīva cakṣur ātatam tad viprāso vipanyavo
jāgṛvāmsaḥ samindhate viṣṇor yat paramaṁ padam
Ṛg Veda 1.22.20-21
[The divine and learned Vaiṣṇavas always have the darśana of the supreme abode of Viṣṇu by their aprākṛta (spiritual) vision. Just as the sun’s rays in the sky are extended to the mundane vision, so in the same way the pure devotees always see the supreme abode of Lord Viṣṇu. Because those highly praiseworthy and spiritually awake devotees are able to see the spiritual world, they are also able to reveal that supreme abode of Lord Viṣṇu to others.]
By this mantra we can be pure. So we should enter and go to the āsana, we should take some water here, that is called acamaniyam, and we should say:
oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ sadā paśyanti sūrayo
divīva cakṣur ātatam tad viprāso vipanyavo
jāgṛvāmsaḥ samindhate viṣṇor yat paramaṁ padam
Ṛg Veda 1.22.20-21
This has been quoted from so many Vedas. This mantra is found in Ṛg Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda, and other purāṇas also. Very common. Very important thing. Oṁ tad Viṣṇu. Who is Viṣṇu? Kṛṣṇa is that Viṣṇu. Not this Viṣṇu here, Paramatma, not this Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu is Himself Kṛṣṇa. He has distributed His name to all others. Rāma, Viṣṇu, Nṛsiṁha…He has given to all, but actually all the names of which we see and of which we hear, all are for Kṛṣṇa, but Kṛṣṇa has distributed these names to them.
So, oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ, the highest pada, highest lobha, the highest Śrī caraṇa kamala. Pada means everything. There are so many meanings of pada. Pada means lobha, pada means Śrī caraṇa, pada means glory, pada means to know, to shine, so many things. Those who are liberated, forever, nitya-mukta, although a sādhana-siddha, both there, they see Viṣṇu and serve there. With their eyes, pasyanti…pasyanti means? To see from these eyes, pasyanti, like we are seeing. So pasyanti. Who can pasyanti? Who will see Kṛṣṇa? Those who are like Kṛṣṇa. How have they become like Kṛṣṇa? By having bhakti they have been liberated. So some qualities are partly in the jīvas. They are fullest, in full, in Kṛṣṇa. Partly some qualities will come. Then we can see Kṛṣṇa and serve Kṛṣṇa, otherwise not. We’ll have to go on the same platform where Kṛṣṇa is. We’ll have to go to Vṛndāvana, and have so many qualities like gopa, gopīs, then we can serve. Here now, we have nothing. We have no greed, nothing. So it has been told to do arcana, to be with Kṛṣṇa, but very far away. So here when we do ārati, we know that an uttamā mahā-bhāgavata can do ārati. How can they do ārati? Who does ārati in Vraja? We have no interest. You have no interest in this, I have some interest.
Kṛṣṇa is coming from cow-herding and Yaśodā was watching since morning, “When will Kṛṣṇa come? When will Kṛṣṇa come?” When it became noon, the time when Kṛṣṇa would come, she used to watch for her son, “Where is my son? What is the time?” Watching and waiting. At once she heard that cows are hammering, humba humba, and a flute sound was coming. Oh, she became upset, “What to do? What to do?” Anyhow she collected one golden tal…Do you know what tal means? Plate. Some camphor, water, and all things. She saw that dust was going in the sky, “Oh, Kṛṣṇa will come. Very soon, very soon.”
All the Vrajavāsīs, all the mothers of the boys, and all the old persons, and all the kiśorīs, and all the children of Vraja…everywhere, everyone was waiting for Kṛṣṇa. At last Kṛṣṇa came, with lakhs and lakhs of cows. Yaśodā came out of the village entrance gate and she saw Kṛṣṇa. She knows that there are some naughty boys who are playing with Kṛṣṇa: Subala, Śrīdhāma, Madhumaṅgala. They are very naughty persons, boys. [Devotees laugh] Sometimes they quarrel with Kṛṣṇa and what do they do? Make Him dance, and do like this, and take dust of Vraja, and here, here…And sometimes they roughly use their fingers, they have some nails, and they do like this. Sometimes they are so naughty that they play hide and seek in the kuñjas. So sometimes it may be that thorns scratch their body.
So she is worried. So first, what does she take? When Kṛṣṇa comes…she takes Him in her lap and then she takes off all the dust using her own…this is giving cloth, the corner of her sārī, veil of sārī, like this. This is cloth. Water, she will take some water and give. And again with this, wiping. Then she will take dupa, dīpa…what is the use of these things? Oh, she is eagerly seeing and discovering where the naughty boys have scratched in the mouth, three times she gives, four times. (inaudible)
So she is searching, very…like this. Very patiently, not…and then… Not this…very patiently she is watching where the scratches are on His mouth, feet, and (unclear) Then, Oh, here, boys are very fond of Kṛṣṇa’s, this…[Devotee: chest] They wrestle with this. So it must be that there are some scratches there. Then she does the whole body at a time, like this…very patiently. (inaudible, 37:55-38:04) The total number of this is fourteen, only fourteen, not more than this. Otherwise Kṛṣṇa will get angry, “Mother, I am so hungry, and you are doing like this and this…” [Devotees laugh] So don’t do it so many times. You’ll have to know all these things, “Why are they doing this?” And it should be given to all.
From there…and if a man is there, you can give him that light and he can give to others. Otherwise, when thousands and thousands are watching and are having darsana of ārati, then not. From there, the priest will do like this for them. That you should do and all things like this. In Govindaji Temple, Gopinātha, where lakhs and lakhs persons go, they cannot bring to each person, it is very difficult. So from there, you can do like this and like this. It will do.
For other things…water, you can pour water last. You should not give the fan to others. Do not use peacock feathers for others. Don’t do this. Otherwise it will be contaminated. We should give…only the light should be given. And very patiently, very patiently. You can use the fan only in summer, not in winter. The madhurkapa is also not used in winter seasons, and not for so much time. Like doing it so that the pūjārī will have to sweat, that sweat will come, not like this. Very patiently, like Yaśodā, or Śrīmatī Rādhikā, Lalitā…very, very pleasant and in a sweet way only. This should not be given to an audience of those who are (unclear, 40:46), only this. Not for so much time, otherwise Kṛṣṇa will be so hungry and He will be angry with Yaśodā. And after that you should give puṣpāñjali.
Any…doing like so in one birth or for two, three, four, eight, ten years, or after 20 years, any bona-fide and rasika Vaiṣṇava or bona-fide Vaiṣṇava will come. Then he’ll change it into sevā. At first we are doing it, not knowing all of Yaśodā’s things, but now we are knowing this. More than that is who does ārati? Lalitā Viśākhā adi kare sakhī gaṇa. (unclear, 41:54) ārati karaye lalitadi sakhī gaṇa. And what is Visakha doing? Kīrtana. Jaya jaya rādhā kṛṣṇa yugala milana. Rādhā kṛṣṇa prāṇa mora yugala-kiśora, jivane marane gati āra nahi mora. Like this. Rādhā-ramaṇa hari govinda jaya jaya. Like this, they are doing ārati. So Lalitā is also doing it more, much more superior than Yaśodā Mā.
When Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa meet together…where? In Saṅketa. Where is Saṅketa? There are so many Sankets, especially in Vaṁśī-vaṭa, in Nandagaon, and in Varsānā midway, there are some. When Lalitā sees, and Viśākhā sees, then they take mṛdaṅga, karatāla, khol, and all others instruments, violin, vīṇā, ektara, sarangi, all. Jumpha, jumpha you know? Very big, (inaudible, 43:15) Jumpha, karatala, and all… So many instruments. Very sweetly and gently, all in one line. So they are seeing and laughing. “Oh, Kṛṣṇa and Śrīmatī Rādhikā have all these scratches,” and they become so happy and happy. And Śrīmatī Rādhikā has some same, Kṛṣṇa also has some same, but They are smiling and in a such a way that They are taking all hearts.
So this arcana…one day, if a bona-fide Vaiṣṇava and guru are found, by them this will go to that. This will be turned. Then he will not do this. What will he do? Bhāva sevā, like Rūpa Gosvāmī, Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī. So, everything is for that thing. What thing? Vraja sevā. So Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī, especially Sanātana Gosvāmī, he wrote Hari-bhakti-vilāsa. And he told how Deities should be, how a priest or pūjārī should be, how they should learn all these things. And then Rūpa Gosvāmī told in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu about bhāva sevā, chanting nāma, harināma. Also those who are liberated like Rūpa Gosvāmī, they will, but adding that mood in what they are doing here to Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, but they are thinking that, “I am in Vraja and evening has come, Lalitā has come, and Lalitā-Viśākhā and all are doing this.” With mood, and tears will come, their heart will be melted.
So the arcana of a kanistha adhikari and the bhāva sevā of an uttama-adhikārī are not one, it is far different. Svamiji has come to give this, but we don’t know why he went and he did not say. He has written, but he saw that at that time they were not qualified, they could not follow all these things. He has given some Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu, the sum and substance, some commentary, not the whole thing. He saw that they could not follow. He could not give Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi, or any books of them. He explained Caitanya-caritāmṛta for whom? For whom? For all, but we are telling that we are not qualified, but when will you be qualified? Only those who have śraddhā are qualified. śraddhāvan jana he śraddhāvan jana he. Only śraddhāvan, śraddhā can go. Śraddhā is of three kinds: kanistha, madhyama, and uttamā. Krame krame, kanistha will go by these things.
So we should try to go deep into Caitanya-caritāmṛta and all the books of Svamiji. Everything is there. If you will go deep, then your eyes will open, and you’ll see everything is there. There is no difference between him and myself and Rūpa Gosvāmī and Śrīla Prabhupāda. Same goal, same motive, same thing. But only words can be different, nothing is different, no moods are different. Some will say “Prema”, some will say “Sneha”, some will say “Māna”, some will say “Mahābhāva”, in other words. Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa. Gaura Premānande Haribol.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Today there is not any program?
Devotee: (inaudible, 3:01)
Śrīla Gurudeva: We will have to go in that school or college, to those who are more expert than you. Sādhu-saṅga sādhu-saṅga vīṇā sādhu-saṅga kuchnahi. We will have to go and ask there and they will (inaudible, 3:22).
Devotee: (inaudible, 3:23) He is asking by what means will we understand? By our own intelligence, by buddhi?
Śrīla Gurudeva: No, no. They will tell…what they will teach us, we will have to follow. And it will be (inaudible, 3:42). They mercifully give the idea by which you can understand, not by worldly qualification or intelligence. Only they can do. We’ll have to give up all worldly knowledge and everything. And this is…He has told, sarva dharma parityaja. Like Arjuna, he said that, “I’ve given everything. I am surrendered to You. What You’ll tell me, I will do and follow.” So like this. Not any intelligence. Like how Śukadeva Gosvāmī told Parīkṣit Mahārāja. You’ll have to be like Parīkṣit Mahārāja or Arjuna, like this.
He will tell the same thing to so many audiences, but those who have past impressions or have this present impression, something, and are very polite and serving, they will understand. Otherwise, intelligence will not make him understand. So sādhu-saṅga, repeatedly we’ll have to do, doing, doing, doing, doing, then we can have these things. Only śraddhā will do. To Gurudeva, we’ll have to give śraddhā, that, “I am surrendered to you, I want to follow you, I want to serve you.” And this will give (inaudible, 5:32). So we should try to have this śraddhā.
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa…[Devotees do kīrtana]
Śrīla Gurudeva: But you should see and understand that I am not saying that you should give up arcana. We’ll have to follow. There is no way without this, but we should add the mood of what I told. When the pūjārī is doing like this, you should think that Yaśodā Mā is doing it. And if anyone is more than this, they can think, “Oh, Lalitā and Viśākhā are doing this arcana.” Understand? When you take water, or acamam, idam acamaniyam, then you should think, “Oh Yaśodā is giving acamana.” Like this. We should apply all these things. Then after that you will see that everything, automatically, everything will come. So we’ll have to… They are separate things, but we’ll have to apply. Then they will become one, and that prema will come. So many can think that, “Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja is saying don’t do arcana, it is only for third-class persons.” I am not saying that.
