[Lecture by Srila Gurudeva, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja]

[Due to poor audio quality, we have kept the text as close as possible to Śrīla Gurudeva’s diction, so as not to make any mistake as to the meaning. When the audio is improved, we will edit over the lecture again, after closely comparing the transcription to the original.]

Śrīla Gurudeva: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has descended to this world to teach prema-bhakti through nāma-saṅkīrtana and to taste the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. So, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī has written what was the mood of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, or, what He wanted to give us. He has told in the beginning that pure devotion, when it is practiced in the supervision, or guidance of any bona fide guru and Vaiṣṇavas, then bhakti begins from śraddhā:

ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-saṅgo ’tha bhajana-kriyā
tato ’nartha-nivṛttiḥ syāt tato niṣṭhā rucis tataḥ
athāsaktis tato bhāvas tataḥ premābhyudañcati
sādhakānām ayaṁ premṇaḥ prādurbhāve bhavet kramaḥ

And after that bhāva comes. So, there are about eight stages coming up to prema, from bhāva it comes to prema. So, we should try to understand all the things and try to have śraddhā after this anartha-nivṛtta-niṣṭhā, after that ruci, then āsakti, then viśuddha-sattva, that is bhāva, and then, after this, we can achieve prema.

Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and especially Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravarti Thakura has explained these ślokas. That, first comes śraddhā. How it comes? It comes when anyhow we are in service of Kṛṣṇa, His associates, like Tulasī, Gaṅgā, Yamunā, Girirāja Govardhana, Vraja, Navadvīpa-dhāma, Purī-dhāma. If, anyhow, it will come in that touch then it becomes sukṛti. Sukṛti means…?
Audience: …pious activities.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Pious activities. How it becomes previous impressions? By example we can understand. Anyone came to see any temple, “Oh, what is there? I will see.” And he came and did parikramā, seeing paintings and all other things here and there and he did parikramā. [unclear 4:23] A pigeon was sitting on the branch of any tree with his wife talking, loving each other, and in the meantime a hunter came and shot that pigeon. The arrow went straight in the heart of pigeon and he came down, fell down, on the earth. But still some life was there and so out of sense he was flying here and there and he did round of the temple which was nearby and he left his body. So, whether he was knowing, willingly, or unwillingly, he took round of the temple and the next birth he became a devotee and received a very bona fide guru, Vaiṣṇava, and gradually śraddhā and all these things. There are two kinds of previous activities. Good activities—like to help poor, to make schools, make any benefit for the public. So much charity giving his all things for poor. He arranged a marriage for poor; so these are pious activities. By this they can have a birth in wealthy family. And even they can go to heaven, but they will have to come here. But, those who are doing like that pigeon they will have association of Vaiṣṇava. Like any saint came and he, not knowing of that saint, but he was pure Vaiṣṇava, he wanted one glass of water, he gave, by this sukṛti was done. This is helping make his impressions for bhakti. So, in this birth, or coming birth, he will have association of Vaiṣṇavas. Then he will hear something from him. So, orderly, śraddhā will come. What that śraddhā is? That is the root, or seed, of the bhakti creeper. What that seed is? That, “I will serve Kṛṣṇa.”

He is seeing that Vaiṣṇava is serving Kṛṣṇa and he will tell that all the sorrows, sufferings, everything goes away, by serving Kṛṣṇa. He will tell the character of Haridāsa Ṭhākura, he will tell the character of Nārada Ṛṣi. He will tell the character of Prahlāda Mahārāja…
[to devotee in the audience]…Oh, don’t do. Oh. Keep it. It is more important. You should not do, Śaci-devī. These are not good activities. You can do at any time but this time only hari-kathā. Otherwise, this will be prominent and hari-bhakti will not…your whole attention will be there. Even if any highest class of Vaiṣṇava is telling hari-kathā we should also give up harināma, chanting, everything. Remember Kṛṣṇa also because all will be there. Our name will not go, perhaps. And if so, it may be not pure. But their hari-kathā is pure Kṛṣṇa. So, we should try to listen attentively if you know that he is Vaiṣṇava, bona fide Vaiṣṇava, or he is guru. Even śikṣā-guru. We should try to listen, giving up all other activities. Hari-kathā. Kṛṣṇa is hari-kathā.

So, seeing the activities of Vaiṣṇavas and hearing, listening to all these things, Prahlāda Mahārāja [unclear 10:06]. Even a so-called person, his father, Hiranyakaśipu, he had a benediction that I will not die by any person, anyone can not defeat me, even demigods. I will not be put to death by any animal, human body, God, goddesses, not even in day, not in night, not in sky, not on Earth, not in any home, not out of home. He had benediction. In other words he became immortal. There was a quarrel with his son.

He used to tell that, “I am Brahma, I am Bhagavān. I have given you birth. So, you should know that I am god. There is no god at all. I am god. So, you should be very faithful to me and carry orders of me.”

And Prahlāda Mahārāja was telling, he was always chanting, “Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa,” or “Hari Govinda.” or “Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.”

At last, Hiranyakaśipu was killed by Nṛsiṁhadeva and Prahlāda Mahārāja was protected. Nṛṣiṁhadeva came: He was not a human body, not an animal, not in day time, not in night time, at the time of evening. Not outside, not inside, on the…what?

Audience: Threshold; door.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Door. Not up. Not down. On His thighs. Not in a month even. It was the puruṣottama. No month at all.

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: Not any weapon also.

Śrīla Gurudeva: No weapon. Nothing.

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: Only nails.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Took his all…

Audience: Intestines.

Śrīla Gurudeva: He took out the…and He became so…After that all were cheering for Him but Brahmā and Śaṅkara told that, “Oh, you should go to your father Nṛsiṁha and make him…

Audience: Peaceful. Consulting.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Not peaceful. Quiet. He at once running and he went on the lap of Nṛsiṁhadeva and some tears were coming, “Prahlāda, I have come late. So, excuse Me. Do you want anything?”

He said, “I am not a business person, that I will serve You and want anything in exchange. I cannot do. So, if any requirement, I require any worldly things, then it should go away.”
Nṛsiṁhadeva said, “You have no worldly desires. So, you should ask any more benediction.”
And he said, “My father should be forgiven.”

He told that, “Oh, it has been done automatically. Those who do bhajana, their 21 generations become liberated and they have bhakti. So, you should not think of this. Even the madhyama adhikārī, but not high class, but yet 14 generations become liberated and they will have bhakti. Even those who are kaniṣṭha, serving, even their seven generations will be liberated and they will have bhakti. So, you should not be worried about that.”

Then, Prahlāda told that, “I want to suffer in this world forever by taking all the bad activities of all the living beings and You should liberate all. For them I will suffer, but they should be liberated.”

Then Nṛsiṁhadeva said, “I am defeated by you, my dear son. My pure devotee. Those who hear all these things, this hari-kathā, they will be liberated at once; they will have bhakti.”

Like so many hari-kathā, pastimes of Kṛṣṇa. Rāmacandra, Nṛsiṁhadeva, the Vaiṣṇava tells hari-kathā to devotees and they have this mood that, “I should also serve because my serving Kṛṣṇa by, all birth, death, suffering, sorrow, everything goes. So, I must serve. This tendency mood is called, “kṛṣṇa-sevā-vāsanā.”

Audience: Desire to serve Kṛṣṇa.

Śrīla Gurudeva: And, gradually, by hearing hari-kathā it becomes thick. And then he serves guru. Who is pure guru? He is pure devotee, to whom I should make this thing more thick. Then some symptoms come. The first symptom that comes is called “Śraddhā.” How you know that this person has śraddhā? Not merely telling will do. But it will be seen externally. The symptoms that, if anyone comes and tells that you should not serve Kṛṣṇa, you should not tell Kṛṣṇa, I will kill you, like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, the demons told that you should not speak Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa. Then he told that even if you cut me into pieces, pieces, pieces, I can not leave chanting Kṛṣṇa. This is called śraddhā.

So, we should know that śraddhā. And if his śraddhā comes like this, not still bona fide, but comes gradually, then he such [unclear 18:04] to whom I should take harināma, to whom I should take dīkṣā? Then, after that, I can follow the processes from śraddhā it will become niṣṭhā. Then, by mixing with sādhus, he meets any bona fide guru, like Svāmīji, like our Gurujī. And hearing hari-kathā, he prays to his holy master, Prabhu, I want harināma, you should give me harināma. He takes harināma first. This is called first initiation. And he begins to chant harināma. Doing some services to Vaiṣṇavas, Ṭhākuraji. But still when he goes to Gurudeva and wants to hear something he becomes sleepy. Idleness comes. He wants that I should do also these things and other things. Chatting also, hearing also. These are anarthas. These are…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: Obstacles.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …obstacles. Still ruci has not come. There are so many anarthas. He thinks how to chant harināma and do all these devotional activities. Being a householder or being a brahmacārī, bona fide with guru? What should I do? No fixed mind is there. But gradually hearing, hearing, hearing, goes and some spirit to hear all these things attentively he has some little taste. Very little. Then he thinks that I should be given dīkṣā so that I can worship Kṛṣṇa. I can do my all devotional activities with my heart. Going on hearing, chanting, remembering, and he gradually gives up all kinds of anarthas. He should not do any offense. There are ten kinds of anarthas, they should not do. Doing all these things he has some relation to Kṛṣṇa, Gurudeva gives him. You are servant; He is master.

First of all you should adopt śaraṇāgati. That is this āśrama name, śaraṇāgati. What is this śaraṇāgati? I will do which are helpful with bhakti. I will never do anything which are not helpful for bhakti. He determines that Kṛṣṇa is my protector. In this world mother, father, anyone is not our protector. Kṛṣṇa surely protects us. So, I should take shelter in His lotus feet. Whether we want or not, we pray or not, Kṛṣṇa will save us. Only His one alone will save us. And we should surrender to Him. Not by only words, but activities. By this body, tongue and also by…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: …mind…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …and after that, when you will realize ātmā, ātmā will also be given to him surrendered. We go to Gurudeva and tell that, “We have surrendered ourselves to you.”
But actually we are not surrendered. We cannot surrender fully. Some part and part. Gradually we can do it. So, if we are knowing that Kṛṣṇa is protector, savior, and we have taken His shelter and offered everything to Him then why you are worried for your…

Audience: …food, lodging…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …food, lodging and all things. Why you are not depending on Him? If anyone has taken shelter to Kṛṣṇa and worry for this, making so many things, not doing bhajana, first we should do all these things and then we will chant, remember, and do activities, and we will try to develop our this first śraddhā, āsakti, bhāva. So, first we should do all these things and then, happily, without no problem, we will develop all these things. It is opposite. Like Rūpa-Sanātana you have seen. Like Haridāsa Ṭhākura and all. They were not doing all these things. Only chanting, remembering, and all the devotional activities. And Kṛṣṇa surely He will manage all the problems. We should only chant, remember, and to preach and all other things.

So, if you are doing so, then all kinds of anarthas, aparādhas, automatically will go. If you are chanting whole day harināma or doing services, and cooking, making prasāda, offering ārati, then we have no time that all the aparādhas will come. We cannot chatter and patter. We cannot criticize any Vaiṣṇavas. We have no time. At that time we will be very pure and then laziness or anything. All anarthas will gradually go. Then niṣṭhā will come.

Niṣṭhā. What is the meaning of niṣṭhā? Niṣ – ṭha. Mind will not go anywhere now. Now we have taken bath and facing to East we are sitting and then we did very beautiful tilaka. Half an hour like this tilaka. Half an hour he took. And when we sit, we sit like that. And remembering, “Oṁ Bhūr…” Coming so many, automatically all the problems we have begun in mind. Sitting here, seeing that my soul has broken or what…?

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: …form…

Śrīla Gurudeva: I should go to a very good supermarket. He is going and seeing. There are so many problems comes in mind automatically. And if we are trying that they should not come. Then sleepiness comes. So, after half an hour then, “Oh, where is that moment?”

You can realize this. They will not come when we are chanting, remembering, loudly dancing, or we are engaged in service. But when they will see that he is in lazy period and he is sitting to chanting all the gopāla-mantra, kāma-gāyatrī, or anything; then they will come. [unclear 27:24] Because we cannot control our mind. We can control our prāṇa…

Audience: …life air…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …air. We can control air. Very hard. But mind is more, more, more, more powerful than this air also. How to conquer, control air? Like this…

How many minutes you can do? Only one minute, two, three, four, five, after that you will have to give up. Otherwise you will die. So, it is very hard to control air. But more, more, more difficult to control this mind. So, yogīs may control by any process but anyone cannot control this mind. Very hard.

When mind is controlled then niṣṭhā will come. So, how to control? By always engaging this mind in the service of Hari, Guru, and Vaiṣṇava. Don’t do anything that is harmful. Those things which are helpful for bhakti we should adopt. Always try to serve Vaiṣṇavas and being in the association. If you are not in sādhu-saṅga you cannot control your mind. Never you can do.

Then, a taste will gradually come. In chanting taste. At that time, if anyone disturbs then our mind will very [unclear 29:15], “Why this person came?”

Then a taste will come really. Taste is of two kinds. When kīrtana is going on in a melodious tune and mṛdaṅga is going on very well and so sweet voices are coming in melodious then, “Oh, very good. Very good.” And third class kaniṣṭha Vaiṣṇava even doing like this dancing, and doing kṛṣṇa-kīrtana. Oh doing very good. And if higher class Vaiṣṇava like Śukadeva Gosvāmī, Haridāsa Ṭhākura, with not melodious tune, but tears are in eyes, but we don’t follow. “Oh it is not [unclear 30:14]. Not so melodious. Not like a kīrtana group in East Bengal. “Oh, we should go there. Very bona fide saṅkīrtana is going on.” Not like this.

We should try to hear, whether there is melodious tune or not, to pure devotees. Those who are selling their Hari nāma-kīrtana with money, that, “You should pay me for an hour 2,000 dollars, then I will do kīrtana.” We should not hear that.

Bhāgavata very melodious tune with harmonium and all other instruments he is telling. And he wants rupees or dollars. We should not hear them. They are business persons. We should not hear all these things from any business persons. We should hear hari-kathā from the bona fide Vaiṣṇavas. Having melted their hearts. No worldly desires. Then it will come.
So, there are two kinds of tastes. [unclear 31:58] means…?

Devotee: One is dependent on paraphernalia or the circumstance and the other is not dependent on the circumstance.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Like when the difference of so decorated, very good, having good ornaments and all jewels and everything. And vigraha is of gold. Then hundreds and thousands of persons will come. And the same vigraha not good decorated, nothing so good, dirty clothes, like Vaṁsidāsa Bābājī’s vigraha, then, “Oh, nothing is there. Come on. Come on. The temple is not so high. The temple is not good. The Ṭhākuraji is not good. He is not of gold. He is only wooden.” He will think like so. We should not do all these things. We should try to see that vigraha is vigraha, Himself Kṛṣṇa. Vigraha is not of gold, vigraha is not wooden, vigraha is not anything other than Kṛṣṇa Himself.

And after that āsakti comes. Āsakti in sādhana and āsakti in śraddhā. Then, after that, viśuddha-bhāva comes. It comes, something is here and something it comes from viśuddha-kṛṣṇa-parikara.

Viśuddha-kṛṣṇa-parikāra means…? Like Śrīdhāma, Subala, Madhumaṅgala. Nanda, Yaśodā. Like gopīs. They serve Kṛṣṇa in full. With their own moods. If anyone, hearing the Vaiṣṇavas, they have greed to serve Kṛṣṇa like them, then every anartha will go, going on, viśuddha sattva descends from them to the hearts of devotees. And this is called śuddha-sattva.

We have something here. But nothing, everything here. But something. Like, you know in the sea there are some oyster shells. And the water from clouds in a special season, that is called ‘svati-nakṣatra.’

Devotee: A special constellation.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …and it goes in the oyster shell and then it becomes…

Mādhava Mahārāja: …pearl…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …but that water will go in the head of elephants then it becomes gaja-mukta. What is gaja-mukta?

Devotee: Pearl.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Very precious. If it goes in the snake’s hood then it becomes poison or jewels. If it goes in banana tree then it becomes camphor. So many things it becomes. Where is the more root potency whether in that oyster, or in water, there is some potency in jīva heart. But without the help of that water it cannot be transferred. Similarly:

jīvera svarūpa haya kṛṣṇera nitya dāsa
kṛṣṇera ‘taṭasthā śakti’ bhedābheda prakāśa

By svarūpa we are dāsa, servant of Kṛṣṇa, then what is our shape, what is our name, what are our activities, what are our services to Kṛṣṇa, how we are serving You, what is the relation, everything is potency in jīva svarūpa. But it cannot come itself. If the anartha is there then nothing to tell. If anarthas are washed out, even, it will not come. When it will come? When the śuddha-sattva from the associates of Kṛṣṇa will descend here, then, by the help of that, in our heart everything will be realized. That is called sattva. Then it becomes śuddha-sattva.
Then stayi bhāva then uddīpana and bhāva. And then prema comes fully in hearts. But it may take lakhs and lakhs births also. And it may be very, in one or two births. It depends on the practice and the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and His associates.

So, we should try to also practice all these things and also we should search the mercy of Kṛṣṇa also. If both are not mixing you cannot realize all these things and you cannot be bona fide Vaiṣṇava. Your affection will not be developed to prema. We can take an example. Yaśodā Māiyā in Vraja, in Nandagāon, or in Gokula, she was churning yogurt and Kṛṣṇa was weeping and He came to Yaśodā and she took Kṛṣṇa in her lap and gave her breast to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa was taking milk so affectionately. You know that lakhs, and lakhs worlds are in Kṛṣṇa’s stomach. Everything that we see is in the stomach of Kṛṣṇa. And Yaśodā has so much milk that the whole world will be satisfied by her milk. It will never come…

Devotee: …to an end.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …to an end. So, Kṛṣṇa was taking the milk and Yaśodā was giving milk. A pot of milk to some distance was boiling on fire. And some milk was going in fire. She was thinking if I am not serving Kṛṣṇa then no use of keeping life. I should burn in ashes. No use. Like Narottama Ṭhākura has told…[unclear 40:23] So, if anyone not serving Kṛṣṇa no use of having life. So, she thinking this milk is going to burn, Yaśodā left Kṛṣṇa and said, “You should sit here. I am just coming.” Serving that milk. But Kṛṣṇa caught hold of His mother’s breast very strongly and like monkey He caught hold of Yaśodā Māiyā, by hands and feet, and grabbed her. Kṛṣṇa was not willing to give up her breast.

You know that when Pūtanā came in Vraja she took Kṛṣṇa in her lap and gave poison through her breast. When Kṛṣṇa began to suck her breast He also took her life. Then she began to cry, “Give up me. Give up me. Give up me.” And she tried with the power of…

Mādhava Mahārāja: …60,000 elephants…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …she was powerful like 60,000 elephants but she could not get rid of that. She could not save her life. And Kṛṣṇa was playing and sucking her breast. But Yaśodā, very simple gopī, she has not such power, externally, and Kṛṣṇa applied His whole Parabrahma power, all opulence, but Yaśodā, “Up! You should sit down.”

Mādhava Mahārāja: Make Him sit easily.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Kṛṣṇa’s whole power could not do anything. He then became powerless. He could not exercise the power because vātsalya-rasa was so much high and powerful that even Kṛṣṇa’s power even failed there.

After that Yaśodā went to save that milk and when she returned she saw that everything has been upset. The pot was broken and everything was out here and there. And He is not here. Where He has gone? Like monkeys. She saw that He had entered in a room and taking some butter and taking something and giving it to monkeys and crows. Why He was doing?

He was doing so that in rāma-līlā, pastimes of Rāma, He had never repaid monkeys and they have given life for Rāma. So, in this pastime, in this birth I will distribute mākhana and all other things. So, He was distributing. And for crows they were in the dynasty of Kakh Basundi, he was a very bona fide Vaiṣṇava. So, He was distributing.

Yaśodā at once tried to catch hold from behind so, having a stick, very like cats, hiding herself, she entered in the room and tried to do like this. At once Kṛṣṇa jumped down from that place and began to run on the main street. Yaśodā said, “Where You will go? I will see You! I will give a very good lesson to You! I have heard that You are stealing each gopīs’ mākhana and bread and butter and everything and now You have begun in my own house. So, I will see You. I will give a lesson that Your whole life You will not do so. You will become bad boy. So, I want that You should be very good boy. So, I will something I will give lesson.”

Brahmā, Śaṅkara, and all other yogīs, mahayogīs, they cannot follow Kṛṣṇa in their hearts. They cannot keep and they cannot see the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa even in samādhi but gopīs are chastising Him.

[unclear]

“When you were running so force anklebells was touched with that pot and it was broken. I have not broken.”

“Oh, You are telling lie.”

“No, no, mother I am not lying. If there is a thief then in your dynasty, your father’s dynasty, not in My father’s dynasty.”

“I will beat You with my stick.”

Then He began to weep, “Mother! Mother! Don’t beat me.” And He began to cry. Tears were coming and also the kajjala mixing Gaṅgā and Yamunā were flowing from here and here. And He was crying so bitterly.

Then Yaśodā said, “I will not beat You but I will bind You and keep You here with that very machine. So, You will not go here and there and You will have to do like this that, ‘I will never do these all these silly things in My life.’” To whom she is doing? Parabrahma.
Who is He…?

īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ
anādir ādir govindaḥ
sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam

[Kṛṣṇa who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the prime cause of all causes.]

And to Him she is making like this and she is going to give lessons. Why? She has so, so, so prema-rati to Kṛṣṇa. Vātsalya-rasa. Then she tried to bind Kṛṣṇa. She took this rope to bind Him and it was silken rope and only two hands but two fingers less. Again she told all the gopīs, “Oh, sakhī, bring another rope.” Bringing and joining, bringing, joining, whole ropes of Nanda Bābā home were joined but still two fingers less. Not even a [48:25] was given two fingers. Kṛṣṇa, this waist, only fell her fingers and rope was going mile to mile increasing but two fingers less in each round. What is this? Why it is going on? Gopīs began to laugh and clap, “You cannot bind this boy because Brahma has not written here that He should be bound. So, give up this thing.”

Yaśodā told that, “Never. He has come from my womb. I should bind. I will bind. I will bind Him, bind Him, bind Him, for my whole life I will…surely I will. Otherwise I will not take water and anything. Then she promised and doing [unclear 49:33].

She thought, “Oh! Oh, God. Oh, Nārāyaṇa I am serving You from so long time and I cannot bind even my son? So, all the gopīs will laugh. So, how to keep my life if my son is not bound?”

Kṛṣṇa saw that she is full of sweats. Sometimes reddish, sometimes yellowish, so she was so much worried for that. At once Kṛṣṇa’s mercy came, “Oh, My mother is doing so much labor and sweat is coming and she is so worried.”

So, at once He became pleased and two fingers went away and Yaśodā bound Him only by this silken rope, otherwise others were given up.

What is this? Kṛṣṇa is Supreme Personality of Godhead. He has so many opulences. Six kinds of opulences. No one is powerful like Kṛṣṇa. So, He thought that, “If māiyā will bind up Me then I cannot play with the boys and they are eagerly waiting for Me to play. And all the cows they will not give milk to their calves until I go there. So, Yaśodā Mā should not bind Me. At once opulence came, aśuddha śakti came. Yogamāyā came and did a very miraculous thing that rest was there and ropes were going so long and long but even took [unclear 51:37].

What is this? One finger is that we are doing so much labor for practicing bhakti-yoga and we think that by this practice Kṛṣṇa will be bound and prema-bhakti will come. We cannot do like this. Lakhs, and lakhs births if Kṛṣṇa’s mercy is not there. So, two things will be there. One: our labor for practicing bhakti-yoga like Yaśodā. Not less than one lakh of harināma I will do. I will do surely that. Every day. And … [unclear 52:52] I will have to do saṅkīrtana, Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa…

Remembering all the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa here. Being in Vṛndāvana in the guidance of any rasika tattva-jñāna Vaiṣṇava. If it is not…

Mādhava Mahārāja: …possible by body then by mind;

Śrīla Gurudeva: Then everywhere thinking that I am in Vṛndāvana, I am in Rādhā-kuṇḍa, on the bank of Yamunā in Vṛndāvana. I am there and chanting and remembering. So, doing all these things Kṛṣṇa will see that, “Oh, he is doing so much for Me, so I should be merciful to him.” His mercy will come at once and both his practice for bhakti-yoga, like Rūpa, Sanātana, Raghunātha, Jīva Gosvāmī, always doing praṇāma. Sometimes in Rādhā-kuṇḍa, sometimes in Girirāja Govardhana, sometimes in Nandagaon, Varsānā, everywhere. [unclear 54:14]

How? Oh, Rādhike, where you are? He Lalite! He Visakhā! He Caitanya Mahāprabhu! Where you are? Oh! Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, where You are? Sometimes rolling down. Sometimes weeping. Sometimes laughing that, “Oh! I am seeing Kṛṣṇa!” Sometimes nothing. No sleep at all. Sometimes very little sleep. Nothing to do. Nothing to do. Then prema comes. So, we should try to follow all these things.

So, two, we will have to do so much practice. [unclear] From sādhana-bhakti to bhāva, bhāva to prema. Thus, āsakti, then this mood of bhāva will come. If we are doing practice for coming bhāva, then it is sādhana. Otherwise not sādhana. What we are doing if it is not sādhana then we cannot be called sādhaka. When our whole energy will be for that. Honoring Vaiṣṇavas. Honoring and serving Gurudeva with very affectionate mood. Hearing always all these things. Remembering all the pastimes of Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Kṛṣṇa like Sad-Gosvāmīs. Not a moment our energy will be given in anything in this world. Then gradually prema will come. So, Viśvanātha Cakravartī explains all these things in Mādhurya-kaḍambinī so well. We will have to read all these books also. Svāmījī has planted that seed in our hearts. In some hearts it has sprouted. Some leaves are coming. But if you will do offense to Vaiṣṇavas and Gurudeva and not following correctly in correct process all these things as Rūpa Gosvāmī has written, then we cannot have that thing. No mood. No taste. Even no taste. So, we should try very sincerely all these things so that we can come in the process of Rūpa Gosvāmī and our Gurudeva.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …only is our practice of bhakti-yoga and seeing this another finger Kṛṣṇa mercy. We are doing practices and thinking that by practice we will have śraddhā, niṣṭhā, ruci, āsakti, and rasa, prema. No need of mercy of our Gurudeva. No mercy of any Vaiṣṇava. No mercy Kṛṣṇa Himself. Then we cannot do. And when Kṛṣṇa’s mercy is everywhere all, but not fully, so if you are doing all these things and Kṛṣṇa will see and He will be so happy and mercy will come and two fingers. His mercy is one finger and our practice is the second finger. For example we can see: cats and monkeys. Monkeys boys they catch hold of their mother very tightly and she does not do anything to save her children and she begins to jump from one place to another and the boys catching her. And where are cats? Taking their children and they are doing meow, meow, meow, and they don’t do anything and she catch hold with her mouth and takes her boys from here to there. They don’t do anything. So, if anyone is only seeing that, “When Kṛṣṇa mercy, or guru mercy, or Vaiṣṇava mercy will come to us, automatically we will have everything.” One are of this kind. And another practicing, practicing, no use of getting the mercy, they are also in the same way. They cannot. But when both are mixing, like a man is falling in well and another person giving a rope that, “You should catch hold, I will take out of well.” But he is not catching then he will not come out of there. So, when he will catch the rope coming from up then he will come out of the well. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa’s mercy is like rope and our practicing is like to catch hold of that thing. Then we can come out of this endless ocean of…like well…of death and birth, sorrows and…Easily we can go up.
