Today is Srila Jiva Gosvami’s appearance day. By our great fortune we are present in ksetra-dhama, which is Mahaprabhu’s very dear place, His manobhista-sthana, the place where His heart’s desire was fulfilled. By Srila Gurudeva’s and Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy, we are present here.
Today, we shall remember the glories of His priya parisada, His dear associate Srila Jiva Gosvami. This mahaprasada is bhagavat prasada, and by taking this we can consider our lives successful. Bhagavan’s prasada means His priya bhaktas, His dear devotees. Those who are God’s atyanta priyas, who are very dear to Him and the recipients of His mercy, are Bhagavat-prasada. They appear in this world to benefit the conditioned souls by connecting them to God. To take shelter of these devotees and hear their glories is only possible for those who are extremely fortunate. Bhagavan Himself is yajnesvara-hari—He appears from yajnas to distribute causeless mercy. Those people who received God’s blessings can help the world. One who has not received God’s blessings and is not a dear associate of God cannot give welfare to others. Therefore you should look for somebody who is dear to God, bhagavat-priya. Then you should try to receive his association, blessings, and mercy, and once you understand the welfare they have given to you, you will naturally want to glorify them.
If someone gave you food or a place to live, then you would not forget this person, and you would glorify him. It is hard to forget somebody who has helped one so much. A person who does this is called ungrateful. There is a guru-drohi, one who is ungrateful to his guru, a pitri-drohi, one who is ungrateful to his ancestors, and a bhakta-drohi, one who is ungrateful to the devotees. If you do not glorify the devotees, Vaisnavas, and bhaktas, then Bhagavan says that you are an enemy in this world. No one will be the friend of such a person, and one who favors this person will as well be the enemy of the world, because he has not glorified the Vaisnavas, who are the sevakas and sevikas of Bhagavan. How much do the sevakas and sevikas serve God? If we do not hear and speak their glories, then we are akrtajna – ungrateful, adrohi – an enemy, and aguna – full of bad qualities. We do not forget someone who has helped us with one roti or one paisa. The vaisnavas who eternally help us, who pull us out of this hell of samsara, where we have been for millions of lives, and who bring us to the lotus feet of God, are our greatest benefactors. If we do not glorify them, then we are extremely ungrateful. They give us the food for our soul that helps us transcend this world and go to the spiritual world. A person who does not glorify them is a pasandi, or an atheist. They are asuras, raksasas, or demons. It is very difficult for such people to get benefit in this world. In sastra it is said:
krsna gurudvaya bhakta sakti avatara prakasa
krsna ei chaya rupe karena vilasa
Caitanya-Caritamrta, Adi 1.32
Bhagavan appears in six forms in this world. Kaviraja Gosvami explains this in Caitanya-Caritamrta. Krsna guru dvaya—Krsna appears in this world in the forms of siksa-guru, diksa-guru, and His incarnations, the avataras: manvantara, gunavatara, avesavatara, saktyavesavatara, who are all His prakasa, His manifestations. One who is grateful glorifies them, but one who is ungrateful wastes time and does not glorify the guru-varga and Bhagavan. Whose property is the soul?
This soul is the separated part and parcel of God. It is not the separated part and parcel of any demigod or goddess. No one can say, “The soul is mine.” But Bhagavan says to Arjuna, “The jiva is mine. I created the Earth, and all the people, and the 330 millions of demigods. A person who thinks himself to be independent brings suffering into his own lap, but for a person who surrenders to Me and accepts Me as his life and soul, I will take responsibility, and even still I will give him independence. It is everyone’s own choice whether they want to act correctly or incorrectly.”
Fools are forgiven, but those who are intelligent and still commit offenses are punished. Those who are udanda, the greatest rascals, will receive the biggest punishment. Those who are connected to the devotees of God and do sravana and kirtana of their glories are siddha or suddha.
Today is a supremely auspicious day, because we are present in the dhama, in the vaisnava mandali, and are hearing the guna gana of the Vaisnavas. This life will be completely auspicious if we surrender ourselves to the guru-varga. By doing kirtana and sravana of Bhagavan’s qualities, we immediately become connected to God.
“O Lord, if You are not pleased, then what is the benefit of me doing anything? And if You are pleased by my actions, then the whole world will receive auspiciousness.”
The Lord Himself hears the glories of the bhaktas, and the bhaktas hear the glories of God. Bhagavan is pleased by this. You must do guna gana kirtana of the bhaktas, and then Bhagavan dances in joy. Why? This is rasa for Him. This is vraja-rasa, to hear and speak the glories of the Vrajavasis. Krsna Himself appears in Vraja to taste this rasa.
How does Bhagavan perform pastimes with the bhaktas? This is the bhagavatam. Bhagavat is of two kinds – bhakta-bhagavat and granta-bhagavat. Lila katha sikarini, this is rasa, this is present in the bhakta-bhagavat and in the granta-bhagavat.
Today, we are hearing the glories of bhakta-bhagavat Srila Jiva Gosvami through whom the rasa-flow is coming to us. By our great fortune we endeavor to attain this, and thus make our lives successful. Today, we shall go forth to do kirtana of the Vaisnavas. There is no benefit in doing yatra tatra, here-and-there-katha like and owl. There is no need to do kirtana here and there. We should do kirtana with the Vaisnavas, the bhaktas, and Bhagavan. Bhakta-guna-gana should be done with Hari and in sadhu-sanga because Bhagavan will then be satisfied. Bhagavan and the Vaisnavas will then taste this rasa and become very happy. Now, we are going to glorify Srila Jiva Gosvami.
Today, I will do kirtana of what little I have heard from the guru-varga, and offer this as pranami. By doing sravana and kirtana one both gets mercy and becomes the object of mercy. Both kirtana and sravana are very important.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu left everything and became a sannyasi. He left Navadvipa, His wife, mother and everything. He even left the bhaktas behind in Navadvipa and went to Jagannatha-Nilacala-Ksetra-dhama. Here in Ksetra-dhama Mahaprabhu entered the Gambhira. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu had no peace or happiness.
Mahaprabhu went to South India to meet with Ramananda Raya, Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, Benkata Bhatta Gosvami, Bimala Bhatta, and Prabhodanandana Sarasvati. One time, He left Puri saying, “I will go to Vrndavana.” But, instead of this, He went towards Ramakeli. He went to kanaya vatsala, and from there, instead of proceeding further towards Vrndavana, He came to Ramakeli. Why? Rupa and Sanatana Gosvami were there. They were occupying the posts of private secretary and prime minister in the palace of the Muslim king. There were three brothers – Rupa, Sanatana, and Anupama, who is otherwise known as Sri Vallabha. Rupa and Sanatana were formerly known as Amala and Santosa. The Muslim Ruler gave them the names Dabira Khasa and Sakira Malek. Caitanya Mahaprabhu went there to meet them and give them their real identity as Rupa and Sanatana. He gave them these names. The younger brother Anupama was given the name Sri Vallabha by Mahaprabhu.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave darsana to these three brothers and met with them. Mahaprabhu was full of sarasa, He was completely satisfied. This katha is well-known. One evening, the three brothers went to meet Mahaprabhu. Sanatana Gosvami said, “It is not the proper method to go to Vrndavana accompanied by lakhs of people.”
If we want to go to Vrndavana, we should go with a few people who are bhava anukula, favorable to our mood. Otherwise, your consciousness will become restless and you will not be able to taste Krsna-rasa.
At the time of Caitanya Mahaprabhu the Mogul dynasty was ruling most of India. Rupa and Sanatana were prime minister and secretary of the Muslim King. When Mahaprabhu reached there, He told them both, “Quit your work here. You should not do this work for the mlecchas. Go to Vrndavana.”
At that time Vrndavana was called Fakirabad and Mathura was called Mamirabad. Other places were called Ghaziabad and Faridabad. The Muslims changed the names of all places to Urdu names.
Mahaprabhu told them to go to Vrndavana to reestablish the hidden places of Radha and Krsna’s pastimes, compose granthas, build temples in which Thakuraji will be installed, and preach bhakti. Why? The rsis, asuras, mleccas, antyajas, and yavanas have attacked Vraja, and afraid of them, all the sadhus hid themselves like mice.
You should not be like this. Bhagavan has given you a life, and therefore you should serve everyday of your life. Why did we come to this world? Did we come to enjoy? How long will we enjoy? We must leave one day. If, by the time we leave, we have not done any service and have not made a relationship with paramatma, the Lord, then our lives passed uselessly. While alive, make a relationship with God. This is the purpose of our lives. If the atma does not make a relationship with paramatma, then what is the use of this life? Then you only eat and pass stool like animals. This is the only purpose of life for somebody who does not endeavor to make a relationship with God.
Mahaprabhu told the three brothers to go to Vrndavana. First, Rupa Gosvami left when Mahaprabhu came to them this first time. When they first came to see Mahaprabhu, they brought a gift that was wrapped up in a cotton cloth.
They knew that if we do not give any gift when we meet Bhagavan, Guru, or the Vaisnavas, then we will not receive anything. Dadati pratigrinati, if we give something, we will receive something. If we give nothing, then what will we receive? If we give and receive from materialists, then our relationship with them will increase, and this would make us more fallen. If we give and receive from sadhus, our relationship with God will be strengthened, because Bhagavan and His devotees are very intimately connected. Therefore, we should offer gifts to the Vaisnavas. This is paramartha. The sadhana of the sadhus is for the help of everyone.
When Caitanya Mahaprabhu received the gift from the three brothers, He opened it and saw that they gave Him a small baby boy. The boy had only been born a few days earlier. Rupa and Sanatana brought him and offered him to Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet. Mahaprabhu said, “Whose jiva is this?”
“He is Your jiva.”
“Oh, you are giving him to me?”
“Yes Prabhu, he is Yours. Ganga is worshiped by Ganga. All jivas are Yours. Whatever you give is Yours. All jivas are Your servants. Those who consider themselves as Your dasa are fortunate, and those who do not consider themselves as your servants will suffer. You are the Lord of all, and all souls are Your servants.”
“You have given this soul to Me,” Mahaprabhu said, “but has he agreed with this? All jivas are independent.”
Then Jiva Gosvami as a small baby boy grabbed Mahaprabhu’s feet. Mahaprabhu’s feet are like red, fragrant lotus flowers, and Jiva Gosvami fell on them and began to suck on Mahaprabhu’s toes.
Kavi Karnapura Gosvami also did this. He sucked on the toe of Mahaprabhu when his mother put him on the feet of Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu said, “Krsna Krsna bolo.” The baby would not speak. Mahaprabhu said, “I gave everyone Krsna nama, but he does not speak? How is this?”
Svarupa Damodara said, “You have just given him diksa, but diksa should not be spoken out loud.”
When Kavi Karnapura Gosvami was a little bigger, he spoke Sanskrit slokas in the glorification of Mahaprabhu.
Similarly, Srila Jiva Gosvami grabbed the feet of Mahaprabhu and put them to his chest. Whatever children find, they put in their mouth. He reached for Mahaprabhu’s feet and kept them on his chest.
Some people become crazy being independent because they keep trying to enjoy with their senses. But if they find shelter of the sadhus, then they will receive parama-santi. Doctors suggest going to the bank of the ocean or the rivers like Yamuna, because then the blood pressure becomes balanced and the mind fresh. They suggest going to gardens where one can get fresh oxygen. But, they do not know that wherever the sadhus are is the real place of santi. This world is polluted by things like satellites, internet, and people who pollute the atmosphere with envy and hate. But, if you go to sadhus, there is no place for envy, hate, and violence. They are completely pure and peaceful. Bhagavan is present in the hearts of His servants and devotees. And what is short where God is present?
Therefore, Jiva took the feet of Mahaprabhu to his chest. The baby can cry for the milk of his mother’s breast, but now Jiva began to cry. He was shivering and his hair stood on end, and he did not want to give up Mahaprabhu’s feet. Mahaprabhu was very happy. He said, “My coming is successful. Seeing this jiva, I am so happy. You have given me a very good gift. This jiva will help the entire world. He will make everyone filled with happiness. He is very special.”
Mahaprabhu came back to Puri. He did not go to Vrndavana at that time. Therefore, He said, “Where is Vrndavana.”
Where the Vaisnavas are present and hari-guna-gana kirtan is going on is the place of Bhagavan. That is Vrndavana. Where will you go, walking and walking to all these faraway places? Find the sadhus. That is Vrndavana. You can find temples built with marble or built with bricks, but you will not have Bhagavan’s name arise in your heart and mouth. Bhagavan is never present without his beloveds, and he never speaks anything without his beloveds. You can go anywhere. So many people do that, but what do they gain. God is with whoever has love for Him, and those who have love for duniyadari, or this world, are only absorbed in this world and they collect things of this world, and they make a separate place for God. At a place where no divala, or lamp, is offered to God is no santi. People make room for everyone – their wives, children, mothers, fathers etc. For them, they build guesthouses and hotels, but there is no place for God. People even think the temples to be their place and not the Lord’s place. Therefore, Bhagavan says to the soul, “I put you to on this earth, but what have you done? For whom have you done this? You came empty handed and naked, and you will leave empty handed and naked. What can you take with you? But, have you made any place for me on the Earth?”
Mahaprabhu came back to Puri. What did Jiva do as he gradually got bigger? His father and all left. His uncles left their posts as prime minister and private secretary in a secret manner, without the Muslim king finding out about it. Otherwise, he would have killed them. We heard this pastime already. Therefore, I will not go into this long history. With great difficulties Rupa and Sanatana, and their brother Anupama escaped and went to Vrndavana in the guise of Muslim mendicants. Form Ramakeli, they went through the forests by foot, carrying only a little food with them. When Sri Vallabha, the father of Jiva Gosvami, was near Ayodhya or Sanket dhama, near the ocean, they would walk until they reached the Yamuna. Then, along the Yamuna they would proceed towards Vraja. First, they would go to the ocean, then from the ocean to the Ganga, then from the Ganga to the Yamuna, and then from the Yamuna to Hrsikesa. There were no paths or roads to Vrndavana 550 years ago. So they would follow the ocean and the rivers, and in this way reach Vrndavana. It was difficult to find the directions through the villages, towns, fields, and forests.
When they were near Sanket Ayodhya dhama, then what happened? Before the two brothers would say, “Oh Anupama, we three brothers should worship Krsna. Krsna’s worship is the highest, as described by Mahaprabhu. In Vrndavana, you should worship Radha-Krsna.”
But Anupama said, “No.” The instruction of an elder brother is the same as an instruction of the father, so he would cry and think, “How can I worship Krsna? How can I lift the head that I have offered to Rama and give it to Krsna?” He said:
Siya rama maya saba jaga jani koro pranama kara juda pani
“I see Rama and Sita everywhere. I am Rama maya. How can I leave my Rama?” In his mind, he was very sad. He thought, “How can I leave Ayodhya and go to Vrndavana. I cannot leave.” But both brothers were praying to him so much. Then, he was coming with Rupa Gosvami, and near Ayodhya, remembering Rama he gave up his life. He thought, “I will not go to Vrndavana. I will not leave Ayodhya or Rama.” He left his body, but he did not go to Vrndavana.
Hanumanji says, “I know that Rama and Krsna are non-different. They are both the same, but I have offered my head, my life, and my soul to Rama, and I know nothing but Rama.” This is his istha nistha, his firm faith in his worshipable Lord.
When Anupama left his body, they offered him to the Ganga. Sadhus do not have to perform ostentatious ceremonies. They gave him jala Samadhi, Samadhi in water.
Jiva was at home with his mother. He had no father, uncles, or brothers. He was under the Muslim rule and he was alone with his mother. What to do? His mother was widowed and she was very young and beautiful. Everyone naturally would want to enjoy her. Muslims wanted to make her their baigum, or wife.
Anyhow, Jiva was very small, and he and his mother was alone. In his early childhood, he made clay deities of Krsna and Baladeva. He would sleep with them, and whenever his mother would give him food, he would first offer it to his deities. He would worship them and sit in front of them and do kirtana. Later, the king Vatsa sent Uzia Kazi. He said, “Where are Rupa and Sanatana?” He had gone to Orissa to break all the temples and steal their wealth. When he returned his secretary and prime minister were gone. He would have kept Rupa and Sanatana in jail, but they had disappeared. There was only a small boy, but what could he say to the boy, or take from the mother? The king would not be so cruel as to hurt a child and its mother. But he was very upset that his secretary and prime minister had left. When Jiva was a little older, the king asked him, “Where are your father and uncles?” Jiva would only point at Krsna and Baladeva, in the form of his clay murtis that he had made. There were not toys for him. They were directly Krsna and Baladeva. At night, the king and his Muslim followers surrounded the house with the intention to take the boy with them. They thought, “If we kidnap him and keep him in prison, then later he will tell us where his uncles went, or his uncles and father will find out and come back to save him.” But Krsna and Baladeva made all the soldiers fall unconscious. Then they sent more soldiers, until the Vatsa himself left his capital, seeing that all of his soldiers went unconscious. Vatsa, the Muslim ruler went to Kanaisala in Bihar. He established the palace of his kingdom there. He had to leave Ramakeli. In Rama Keli, there was Rupa sagara, a big kunda, and all the tirthas were present there. Radha kunda and Syama kunda had been made by Rupa and Sanatana. The pastimes of Radha Syamasundar were manifested there. All the santas and brahmans were there and kirtana and yajna were going on, charity was been given, and purascarana and mantra were going on. Jiva was a little boy. The little boy was protected by Krsna and Baladeva. All the Muslims were becoming Hindus, and leaving their faith. Therefore the king was afraid and left to Bihar.
Now, the little boy was with his mother and gradually we grew up. Jiva was very powerful from his very childhood. As he grew up, he was so beautiful, effulgent, and so intelligent and skilled in reading and writing. His mother had no difficulties in her life. When Jiva was a little older, he helped to maintain the asramas that his father, brothers, or uncles had established. And he would give charity to the sadhus. He would set aside money so that charity would be given regularly to the sadhus and Brahmanas. His mother said, “Your father and uncles would do this.” He thought how to do this, but whatever is there Krsna and Baladeva would give.
Gurudeva would tell me when Kartika was about to start, “Vraja Mandala Parikrama is coming up. Are you prepared?”
“How will I do it? I don’t have any money. I gave you everything.”
Then Gurudeva would close his hands in front of my face and then open them and say, “Take, take.”
“You did not give anything.”
“Don’t worry; Gaurisena will give.”
“Who is Gaurisena?” I asked.
Now I understand who Gaurisena is. I never had any problem. Even during huge festivals in which twenty-five or thirty-thousand people attended I never had any shortage of prasada or anything. Gaurisena or Srimati Radhika is Laksmi-sarvesvaresvari. She is the presiding deity of all potency, wealth, opulence, beauty etc. Wherever the sadhus are served, Laksmi is ready to serve. She is always ready to serve the sons of God, or the sadhus. But those who are very misfortunate and do not accept the sadhus are begging in the street and have no food.
Jiva would tell Krsna and Baladeva, “O Krsna, O Dou bhaiya, some Brahmins came to our door. Give them some bhiksa.” Then, just like kheer chora Gopinatha hid kheer under His caddar, Krsna and Baladeva said, “Look we saved something. Look there under the caddar.” How much was there? Twenty lakhs of rupees. They left so much wealth. Jiva understood that Rupa and Sanatana had left so much money, and Jiva took this and engaged it in the service of the Brahmins, the beggars, the sick, his neighbors, and the sadhus. His mother said, “Oh Jiva, where does so much money come from? From morning to evening so many people take prasada and are given charity. Where did you bring this all from?”
Jiva said, “O mother, Rama, Krsna, and Baladeva are the givers. They are the father and creator, of everyone. My father is Rama, Balarama. Rama is the only one who gives charity to the poor and the destitute.”
In the Muslim capital everyone was happy. But what was about to happen no one could stop or change. First, the mother had lost her husband and her husband’s brothers. When Jiva was sixteen years old, he said to his mother, “I will go and study at the university.”
“What will you learn?”
“I will go to the Sanskrit University. When I understand Sanskrit, I can understand sastra or Bhagavan’s word or vani. If I am a fool without an understanding of aksara, then how can I understand Paramaksara Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord? Therefore, let me go to study, mother.”
She could not tell no to him. Why did she not refuse? Samsarik people will not let anyone who is selfish go away. But, where there is no selfishness, where one is connected to God, one will not sadden anyone else because of one’s own selfishness. She was a real mother. A real mother is able to let her child go for the service of God. After taking care of her child for so many years with her own life, with her breast milk, and everything, she let him go and follow his heart. Such a mother’s life is successful.
How would Jiva go so far alone? Navadvipa is far away from Ramakeli. Walking from Ramakeli, he came to Navadvipa. Mahaprabhu had disappeared. Visnupriya was present in Navadvipa. Mahaprabhu appeared in a dream of hers, telling her, “My son is coming. You should look after him and give him your blessings.” Mahaprabhu was a sannyasi. Where did he get a son from? It is said in sastra:
namas trikala satyaya jagannatha sutaya ca
sa bhrtyaya sa putraya sa kalatraya te namah
Sa putaya means that we offer pranama to Sacinandana, the son of Jagannatha Misra, and to his putras, His sons. He had three sons. One is Kavi Karnapura Gosvami, one is Raghunandana Thakura, and one is Jiva Gosvami. These three boys were offered to the lotus feet of Mahaprabhu in their infancy by their mothers and fathers. Therefore, they are accepted as the sons of Mahaprabhu. The parents knew that if you offer your child to someone like Mahaprabhu, to the Lord or His devotees, then that child’s life will be perfect and successful.
Then, Mahaprabhu also appeared to Baladeva and said, “My son is coming. O Dau, go and give affection to Jiva. Accept him and take him on darsana of Navadvipa.”
Srivasa and Advaita Acarya were informed by Mahaprabhu, and at night they had dreams of Jiva’s coming. In the morning they went and saw him. Mahaprabhu then was going with Isana Thakura and Vamsivadana Thakura. Saci Mata had also disappeared. Only Visnupriya was remaining at home with Isana Thakura. Isana Thakura was an aged servant of the household who had helped them for three generations. Even before Mahaprabhu’s sannyasa, Visnupriya would never be seen outside by the sun. She would go to the Ganga at three in the morning and come back in her wet cloth. She would do bhajana all day, and she would prepare some bhoga and offer it to Mahaprabhu’s deity, to Saci Mata and Isana Thakura, and then she would take some remnants. No one ever saw her. But now, Mahaprabhu said, “Go to see my son, and bless him.”
In the evening, Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita, and Srivasa were all present, and they saw Jiva arriving. Jiva came and knocked at the door of the house of Saci Mata. She knew that he was coming because she saw it in her dream. She opened the door, and Jiva offered prostrated obeisance to Visnupriya, who placed her two feet on Jiva’s head. She said, “Son, Mahaprabhu instructed me to accept you as my son, and to give you a responsibility. The Lord has left, and I will also leave soon. Nama seva, dhama seva, vigraha seva, and granta seva is your responsibility in life.”
Krsna Janmastan was taken over by the Muslims, Mahaprabhu’s birthplace also disappeared, and Rama’s birthplace was also taken over by the Muslims. These places had to be served; this is dhama seva. This responsibility was given to Jiva, who accepted this instruction.
Nityananda Prabhu was nearby. Visnupriya offered bhoga to Mahaprabhu, and then gave the prasada to Jiva, who became completely satisfied. Laksmi devi herself is Visnu priya. She is bhagavati bhakti svarupini. At this day, Jiva took her mahaprasada. Who has such great fortune?
Maha Laksmi serves and cooks for Jagannatha. Even now Laksmi cooks were bhagavata dhama and the Bhagavat’s associates are present. No one else is in charge of the cooking. Only Bhagavan and His sakti are doing everything.
Taking the prasada of Visnupriya, Jiva understood that at this day he really came to the dhama. Then, Nityananda Prabhu took him on darsana of all the pastime places of Bhagavan Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and on parikrama of the dhama. I spoke this in the afternoon in English.
Adhyapiha se lila kare gauraraya kona kona bhagyavana dekhibare paya
Even now Mahaprabhu’s pastimes are happening in Navadvipa dhama. Mahaprabhu never leaves His dhama. But only fortunate people can see these pastimes. Bhagavan’s dhama, names, and seva are non-different and eternal.
Wherever Nityananda Prabhu went in Navadvipa, He revealed the pastime places of Mahaprabhu, and they were all manifested before the eyes of Jiva. We spoke about this in the afternoon. Jayadeva and Padmavati were serving Radha-Madhava where they composed Gita Govinda and where Gaura Gadadhara where worshiped by Dvija Vaninatha, who is Anuradha. They went to Campakahata and Nityananda Prabhu showed this place and showed who Gaura Gadadhara was served.
In this way, they went to all the pastime places in Navadvipa, and then Nityananda instructed Jiva, “Now, go to Vrndavana.”
“O Prabhu,” Jiva said, “I cannot disobey Your order. But still, how can I go? I have offered myself to Your lotus feet, and do not wish to leave Your feet for one moment. I will stay here and serve the dhama and Mahaprabhu. I will stay in the asrama of Visnupriya, my mother. Please allow me to do so.”
Nityananda Prabhu began to tell him, “O Jiva, Sri Vrndavana has disappeared. There are no pastime places revealed, no asramas, no temples, no grantas and sastras. No one who gives dharma siksa is there. There are no dharmic, religious, or spiritual people.”
There are so many people who speak about adharma – economics, biology, civics, anthology, morphology, and different methods of cheating. Everywhere, we find these types of schools, but there is no one who gives dharma siksa.
“Go Jiva,” Nityananda said, “Go to Vrndavana and do this service to the world. Go give dharma siksa to the world. This is the greatest benefit for the world, the greatest service. Dharma raksati dharmakah, dharma protects its protectors. Therefore, go and uphold dharma.”
Nityananda Prabhu, with great difficulty, would instruct Jiva, but Jiva did not want to leave and would fall senseless. He was very happy when Nityananda Prabhu did not speak about going to Vrndavana. Nityananda Prabhu thought what to do. He said, “Look Jiva, your uncles, Rupa and Sanatana are there. They manifested so many granthas.”
At that time, there were no paper or pens. How did they write the books? Rupa and Sanatana had no house and the Muslims ruled Fakirabad. Rupa and Sanatana would stay under trees, were they would boil palm leaves and with peacock feathers and the juice from leaves or minerals from stones, they would write their books on these leaves. They would carefully preserve them. They manifested so many books.
“If you don’t go Jiva,” Nityananda said, “then who will they give these books to, and who will they teach them to. When they leave, the books will also be lost. Therefore, go and protect those granthas. And you should copy them. Don’t copyright them. Like a scribe, you should copy them again, and distribute them. The Muslims will follow you. Don’t worry. Everything will be favorable. Just go to Vrndavana. These sastras will then spread all over the world.”
Nityananda Prabhu said, “You must go and protect these granthas. Without this nothing is there.”
The gosvamis were manifesting the essence of the Vedas and the Puranas through Samadhi bhasya, or meditation directly connected to God.
“Before you compose books, you have to do another thing, Jiva,” Nityananda said. “Write a book on Sanskrit grammar with Bhagavan’s names. Call it ‘Harinamamrta-vyakarana,’ write this book. By knowing this grammar, people will understand what is aksara, or the Absolute Truth. Make a grammar by which people will be connected with Hari.” Then, he wrote Harinamamrta-vyakarana. All the granthas that the Gosvamis’ wrote they left in Jiva Gosvamis’ care. They preserved everything with him. Then Jiva Gosvami copied them all and preserved them.
Before Sri Jiva went to Vrndavana, he went to Varanasi where Madhusudana Vacaspati, who was the disciple of Sarvabhauma Battacarya, was present. Mahaprabhu heard Vedanta for seven days from Sarvabhauma Battacarya, and thereafter Mahaprabhu spoke Vedanta. Madhusudana Vacaspati was there at that time. After Sarvabhauma Battacarya disappeared, his disciple went to Varanasi, and instructed the mayavadis there about the real meaning of Vedanta. Prakasananda Sarasvati and the thousands of sannyasis and disciples in the Sankaracarya sampradaya met with Mahaprabhu. There, all of them received vraja-bhava and vraja-rasa from Mahaprabhu. Madhusudana Vacaspati spoke about this with Jiva.
Keeping this wealth in his heart, Jiva Gosvami went to Vrndavana. Jiva was just a sixteen year old boy. In Vrndavana, Jiva met with Rupa and Sanatana, Lokannatha Gosvami, Bhugarupa Gosvami, and the other Gosvamis such as Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, Raghunnatha Bhatta Gosvami, and Raghunnatha dasa Gosvami. Everyone blessed Jiva. They said, “Jiva will protect our Gaudiya sampradaya. He is vaisnava samrata, the general of the vaisnavas.”
At that time the Muslim ruler was in Delhi. Many years after Jiva’s arrival, the ruler called him to Delhi. Jiva Gosvami said, “I will not leave Vrndavana for one night.” The ruler had fallen in great perplexity because of a divide amongst the Hindus. The eastern Hindus said that Ganga is the greatest, and the western Hindus said that Yamuna was the greatest, and therefore they were fighting with each other.
The Muslim ruler said to Jiva, “I don’t know how to settle this conflict between the Hindus. You are the general and the protector of the Vaisnavas. Please, come and settle this dispute. You are the samrat of Ksetra dhama, Vraja dhama, and Navadvipa dhama, and the most learned. I’ve heard your glories. Please come.”
Jiva Gosvami suggested that the dispute be settled in Vrndavana, but the king said, “No, I will not go to Vrndavana. Vrndavana is Fakirabad, the place of mendicants or fakirs. There is such a sakti present that whoever goes there becomes a Vaisnava. I am scared of going there. Then I will also take a bead bag and chant and go begging.”
yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama
Whoever goes to Vrndavana becomes completely absorbed in the place. Many kings, vatsas, and Muslims had gone to Vrndavana and met with the Gosvamis and completely offered themselves to Krsna.
The king said, “O Jiva, I will go to Agra. There I have a small capital. I will arrange chariots every five kilometers. In this way you can come to Agra in one day, settle the dispute, and then return back to Vrndavan within the same day. Therefore, you will not have to be away from Vrndavana at night.”
When Jiva Gsovami came to the assembly, he said, “I will not say whether Yamuna or Ganga is better. I will only speak their glories as described in sastra. Those who hear these glories can in their own hearts decide who is greater.” Jiva glorified Ganga for so long, and in such a nice way. He said, “In this world, all the jivas are moha grasta, sinful and always competing and hurting each other, and thus they are always suffering. They don’t know the path of salvation. Bhagavan sent his caranamrta, His foot bath water. This is transcendental liquid that saves everyone by remembering it, worshiping it, or taking acamana of it. Simply by touching the air that has touched the Ganga one can be saved, and all one’s hatred, envy, and his competitive spirit can be pacified.”
Everyone began to clap and glorify Ganga. Jiva spoke the glories of the Ganga for hours on end. He sang:
devi suresvari bhagavate gange tri bhuvana tarini talara tarange
He did kirtana of Ganga’s glories, and hearing this, everyone began to dance and clap in ecstasy.
The Hindus from Western India thought, “Oh, he has not glorified our Yamuna. We have lost.”
Then, offering pranama to Ganga, Jiva Gosvami began glorifying the Yamuna.
cidananda-bhanoh sada nanda-sunoh
aghanam lavitri agat-ksema-dhatri
pavitri-kriyan no vapor mitra-putri
‘May Yamuna-devi, who is the abode of the most exalted prema for that son of Nanda, and who is the embodiment of spiritual cognizance and bliss, and whose form is liquid transcendence, who forgives sins and offenses and nourishes the living beings of this world with motherly affection—may that daughter of the Sun-god purify me.’
Yama and Yamuna are the son and daughter of the Sun. If one simply bathes in the Yamuna, Yama cannot take him to hell. Yamuna said, “O brother Yama, if one bathes in my water and prays to me, then do not take them to hell.”
Ganga ke snana Yamuna ke dhyana—the result of bathing in the Ganga comes simply by remembering the Yamuna. Jiva Gosvami showed the glories of the Yamuna. Simply by remembering Yamuna one gets the benefit of bathing in the Ganga. Ganga is the sevika of Visnu and Yamuna is the priya, or beloved, of Bhagavan. The king and all the Hindus were happy. Jiva Gosvami described how Ganga and Yamuna are both present in the triveni sangam, along with Sarasvati. Sarasvati gives pure intelligence, Ganga purifies one, and Yamuna makes one connected to God with love. Jiva Gosvami glorified the triveni sangam, and everyone was very happy.
After this, the king said, “I want to give you some gift.”
Jiva Gosvami said, “I am a sadhu. What can I take from a king like you? My Maharaja, I have my Krsna; He provides whatever I need. I do not need anything from you. If I would take anything, I would take from Datta, the Lord of all. If I take from a beggar, then I will have to beg. Everyone in this world receives everything from God. We are all beggars. If I take from God what He gives, then only happiness is there. If I take from a beggar, I would only become sad.”
The king thought, “The whole world comes to beg from me, but now this babaji does not want to take anything from me?”
Srila Gurudeva went to the West and said, “I have not come to the West to take from you. I have come to give something invaluable to you. I am not a beggar who has come to take your money. I am amrtasya putra, the son of the immortal Lord. I am the son of Divine Nectar, and I have come to give this nectar to you. I have not come to take your wealth. Understand this.”
Jiva Gosvami told the Muslim ruler, “I don’t need anything from you, O king.”
But the king again said, “If I don’t serve the santas, or the sadhus, then I will have no auspiciousness in my life.” At that time, paper was just starting to be produced in India.
The king said, “I will send you paper for your granthas.”
Jiva then was very happy. Very nice paper was sent from Delhi. This was five-hundred years ago. Then the granthas of the Gosvamis were first printed and distributed. All the grantas of the Gosvamis were manifested, and then the original sastras were given samadhi. The king also asked for one copy of all the books and Srila Jiva Gosvami sent them to him.
Even now, these copies are present in Delhi in a museum. Also in Madras, Calcutta, Bombay, and different places these granthas are present. Gita Press also published many books, but the original books were given Samadhi in Vrndavana. This was all manifested by Jiva Gosvami, Rupa Gosvami, and Sanatana Gosvami, by the desire of God.
Today is the appearance of Srila Jiva Gosvami. Now is the time of arati. May Bhagavan give us mercy that all day long, we can do kirtana and hari-katha. May our good fortune be that we can all day and night be engaged in hari-katha and kirtana. This is the only rasa in our lives. We may go to so many beautiful places in this world, but the consciousness of the people there is not pure. By drinking this hari-katha-rasa, by hearing the glories of the bhaktas and Bhagavan, then the heart, mind, and everything becomes purified.
Tomorrow is the appearance day of Bhaktivinoda Thakura and we will hear his glories. After that is the Bhagavat avirbhava tithi on purnima. Catuh sloki Bhagavata appeared on that day. Everyone should memorize the catuh sloki Bhagavata. Bhagavan Narayana gave these slokas to Brahma. The person who remembers these four slokas in his life will enter Bhagavan’s dhama, and he will have a relation with Bhagavan. Therefore, throughout the world on this day of Visvarupa purnima, Bhagavat purnima, everyone worships the Bhagavat, and offers prayers to the Bhagavat, and does guna gana of the Bhagavat. Therefore, we should practice now. When a person is related to brahma and has memorized the Word of God, he will be a brahmacari or a brahmacarini. Memorizing God’s Word is worship of God. Worshiping with wealth, flowers, or bhoga is not the highest worship. If we do not follow and memorize the Word of God in our lives, then we have not fully pleased God.
Tomorrow, we will hear how Bhaktivinoda Thakura brought bhakti to this world, and how he showered everyone with bhakti-rasa. When I think about this, all day I become absorbed in his glories and hari-katha. The guru-varga has given such an infallible wealth. Therefore, we should always be absorbed in this hari-katha and kirtana. Paramarta cittan, we will never have high blood pressure, we will never have a brain hemorrhage, or think about this world. Our lives will be full of bliss. We will always, day and night, think about the Lord and his pastimes and associates. I want this. Therefore, speech, language, and intelligence are not such a big thing. We should think, “How can I attain the mercy and the love and affection of God.” Then, everything will naturally flow through us. We will be a recipient of God’s mercy.
We are very fortunate that the Lord has arranged a place for us to perform hari-katha, and sravana and kirtana, and to taste this bhagavat-rasa. Please follow this and then hari rasa madira madadi matha, we will always take this hari-rasa and we will become mad in this rasa.
Mahaprabhu said to the devotees, “Take prasada up to your neck and dance in hari-sankirtana. Gaura Hari Hari bol! Dance with the devotees!” By following this instruction, Maya has no power to touch you.
Bhagavan says, “As you sing and dance in kirtana, and as you speak and hear hari-katha I am with you, do not fear. I am not far from you.”
naham vasami vaikunthe yoginam hrdayena ca
mad bhakta yatra gayanti tatra tisthami narada
The Lord declared, “I am present wherever My devotees speak hari-katha. I leave Vaikuntha and the hearts of the yogis only to go where hari-katha is spoken.”
