SRILA GURUDEVA AND SRILA SWAMI PRABHUPADA ON DRUG USE:

1. These mad persons take many drugs and fall down in a gutter, and dogs come and lick their faces. Still, they are thinking, “We are the monarch of all. We are very happy.” – Srila Gurudeva 3 May 2001
2. We should not make money by drug selling and similar occupations. The maintenance of our life should be pure. – Srila Gurudeva 16 June 2003
3. You may knowingly or unknowingly be in the association of a lusty person who is smoking, taking drugs, or doing all other bad things – whose character is very loose. If you take your meals with him, if you sleep beside him, if you do other activities with him, what will be the result? You will go to hell. You will become like him. Your character will be loose and you will begin to take drugs and all other things. You will be very far away from bhakti and thus your life will be spoiled. – Srila Gurudeva 1 Feb 2000
4. The second function of the tongue is eating. If you eat meat fish, and other prohibited items, or if you take drugs, they will also harm you, and you will not be able to control your mind or your heart. – Srila Gurudeva 2 July 2008
5. Some persons, like some Indian yogis, consider that their spiritual life and yoga practice will be helped by taking ganja and bhaang. They think, “Now we are absorbed in krishna-prema.” They are so foolish; they cannot imagine that they are going to become mad like dogs and hogs. – Srila Gurudeva 28 April 1998
6. One should not smoke ganja. One should not take opium or similar intoxicants. – Nectar of Devotion, Offences to Be Avoided (19-20)
7. If any ordinary person tries to imitate Lord Siva by drinking poison or smoking ganja, he is sure to be vanquished. – Krishna Book
8. Indulging in wine and meat, keeping long hair on one’s head, not bathing daily, and smoking marijuana are some of the habits which are accepted by foolish creatures who do not have regulated lives. By such behavior one becomes devoid of transcendental knowledge. – Srimad Bhagavatam 4.2.29 Purport
9. Sahajiyas are debauchees, woman-hunters and smokers of ganja. Sometimes they give a theatrical performance and cry for the Lord with tears in their eyes. – Chaitanya Charitamrita 2.1.34 Purport
10. Krishna Consciousness is not that I go to the temple, ring the bell, close the door and go to smoke ganja. No, it is not like that. It is not like that. – Srila Prabhupada Lecture Bhagavad Gita 4 April 1974
11. After performing yoga some people thing, “Oh, my tongue is now dry, give me one cigarette.” That is not yoga practice – smoking ganja, cigarette, intoxication, tea, and he has become a yogi. These are useless, all bogus. – Srila Prabhupada Lecture Bhagavad Gita 4.9, 29 Mar 1974
12. If you are fond of smoking, drinking, ganja, cigarette, wine, even chewing pan and tea, how can you be sadhu? – Srila Prabhupada Lecture Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.7, 18 Oct 1972
13. In Vrindavan you’ll find so-called babajis, they have imitated the dress of Rupa Gosvami – half loincloth – but a cigarette in the mouth. What is this nonsense? Rupa Gosvami used to smoke cigarette? (laughter) – Srila Prabhupada Lecture Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.41, 21 Oct 1974
14. Krishna never advised Arjuna that “I am your friend. I shall do everything. You sit down and smoke ganja.” Neither Arjuna said, “Krishna, You are my friend, great friend. Better You do it. I sit down and smoke ganja” This is not Krishna Consciousness. – Srila Prabhupada Lecture Srimad Bhagavatm 1.8.18, 10 April 1973
15. One must be willing that “I must be purified to approach Krishna.” Not that “I am approaching Krishna. I can smoke bidi. I can take marijuana. I can…” No. Otherwise he becomes sahajiya. – SP Lecture Nectar of Devotion 30 Jan 1973
16. I have heard one rumor from C that A and B are smoking ganja. In that case, A should be asked to leave for U.S.A. immediately and do what he likes. But he is a big leader, and if it is common knowledge that he is using such intoxicants, the others will follow his example and there will be havoc throughout the society. That would be a catastrophe. Therefore I am enclosing one letter to A and I am ordering him to return to USA immediately and not to become misled himself and thus mislead everyone else. As for B, if he returns to the U.S.A. he will not stop this nasty habit and it will be worse if he goes there than if he remains in India with his family. So he may remain wherever he likes in India, but he must live separately from the devotees and if he continues this thing he may be requested not to associate with any of our devotees further. – Srila Prabhupada Letter to Anonymous
17. I said to stop this intoxication, not your editing. You say it is rumor only, but I have heard it several times from other persons. So let it remain as rumor, don’t let it be fact. That will give me great hurt. I am also coming to Calcutta soon and we may discuss everything further when I come there. And why you are living with that ganja smoker? He has got his wife and family, so you should separate from him and live in the temple as the others are doing. If there is such complaint against our senior men it does not look well. – Srila Prabhupada Letter to Anonymous
18. I have heard a rumor by C that you have been detected, along with B, smoking ganja or other things like that. This is not at all good, and I am very much disturbed to hear it. I had also got one report that you were previously smoking ganja at….. You are one of the important leaders, so if you are feeble and you are still victim of such habits, then the other members who are following your example will be led to ruination by you only. That will be the greatest disservice to Krishna, if we work so hard to make a man a devotee and then seeing the older members taking intoxication and doing all nonsense, they become lost to Krishna, that is the greatest sin. You may be forgiven once, twice, but more than that it is impossible. So I do not know why this weakness has come upon you, you are intelligent boy, but we shall not tolerate such nonsense again. Once before our D was also detected and he left our society. So no one is exempt from being asked to leave, only I have got also great affection for you personally and you have done so much service that I am little reluctant to become angry upon you. But do not involve the other devotees in your nonsense activities of intoxication. – Srila Prabhupada Letter to Anonymous
