When we control our mind and senses, then material thinking, wants, and so forth, will subside. Without the full-fledged manifestation of our svarūpa, it will not go away. So, we should try to remove all these things. Now, when the anarthas slowly get removed, and when we come to the stage of āsakti, which is more than ruci, and especially to the stage of bhāva, then our svarūpa-siddhi manifests. This is like something covered with glass; we can see what is inside, even though it is covered with glass. So, we should hear from a mahānta who has that svabhāva and then we should practice that mood being in the association of mahat-saṅga. So, this means, first it comes like a shadow, and then gradually it develops and comes. So, we should have that mood. If the mood is not there, and we are getting another mood there, then we must understand. For example, if our ātmā does not have vātsalya-rasa, but if we are bringing a vātsalya-rasa mood, then it will not come by itself naturally. After some days, the mood will go away. Whatever is your mood—only that will manifest. It will not come artificially. So, when we are covered with māyā, even hearing of these topics has some effect. Like there is fire. If we cover fire, even then the heat will come up. Why? There is fire, so from fire, heat is coming. So, one is baddha, but māyā is going on somewhat, all the offenses, etc. are going on, even then something will come. That is the thing.

Bhaktivinoda Thākura has written that even if the jīva is baddha, his nature (svabhāva) is not destroyed. Whatever love he has towards God, he will show it towards others. And when he does sādhana-bhajana, then whatever his nature is, if his nature is vātsalya, he will show the same either to everybody else, or to Kṛṣṇa.

Devotee: People are saying that Mahāprabhu especially came to give mañjarī-bhāva. And if we don’t have potency of that bhāva, then how can we get it?

Śrīla Gurudeva: We can achieve this bhāva because even though we may not know it, especially those who have this potency will come to Mahāprabhu. Those who have this potency will feel similar persons to be like magnets. If not, he will go to other places like the Nimbārka Sampradāya, Māyāvāda Sampradāya, or Madhva Sampradāya, and so forth. So, it is our hope that when Kṛṣṇa has made the arrangements to bring us here, then we have that potency. This is the reason. This is a very sūkṣma (subtle) topic.

See a falling stone. If you throw a stone up, it will come back to Earth. But if in between there is a tree and the stone gets stuck, it will not come back to earth. If the tree is cut, then it will come down. Until it comes down, he is doing service in another sampradāya, like the Nimbārka or Madhva line. He may be stuck in the Rāmānuja line. The tree has so many branches. The highest thing is mañjarī-bhāva. But anyhow, if one is stuck in the branch of Madhva, Rāmānuja, Nimbārka, but in the end if the tree is cut down, he will try to go to his original nature. Understand this? In some way, some jīva has mañjarī-bhāva in his svarūpa, but for some reason, he has gone to the Madhva philosophy. Just like Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇajī. He went to the Madhva philosophy, but again returned back. Like this, the jīva will go somewhere and perform sādhana, and after doing sādhana, he will not be satisfied. Like Gopa-kumāra. He went somewhere else, and did not feel satisfied there. He will then come to Nimbārka, and then to Vallabhācārya, where there is a vātsalya mood. Then he will not feel good, and then he will come to bhāvarūpa, in mañjarī-bhāva. Understand something?

Devotees: Yes.

Devotee: What if one hopes for mañjarī-bhāva, even he doesn’t have that mood?

Śrīla Gurudeva: For one who possesses the wrong mood, the blossoming of this mood will not happen, then that devotee will go to Śrī Rāmānuja’s line. But we hope that, the devotee will feel happy and satisfied here, for `a magnet like mood will attract and pull him here.

Śrī Anupama Prabhu and Śrī Murāri Gupta had the same love for both Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and their worshipable Lords Śrī Rāma or Nārāyaṇa. When Mahāprabhu told them to one-pointedly worship Śrī Rādhā Kṛṣṇa, they were unable to do so. Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī, Śrī Prabhodānanda Sarasvatīpāda, Śrī Vyeṅkaṭa Bhaṭṭa and Śrī Tirumala Bhaṭṭa were in the Śrī Sampradāya, but they were pulled and attracted to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

[Just before the boarding, Śrīla Gurudeva and the devotees have a short talk, which is as follows)

Śrī Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura, Śrī Śrīnivāsa Ācārya and Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu were under the guidance of their śikṣā-guru Śrīla jīva Gosvāmīpāda while they were living in Vraja. Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu heard for many years from Śrī jīva Gosvāmīpāda; thus he became matured in siddhānta and everything. He became purified and realized as he was performing his human-like naravat pastimes. One day he came to Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī and showed to him a very shining, effulgent ankle bell.

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī questioned him, “Where did you get this ankle bell?”

Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu replied, “From the very place you designated as my area of service, I got it while I was sweeping.”

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī said, “Don’t give it to anyone but Śrīmatī Rādhikā, I believe this belongs to Her. She wants to sprinkle Her mercy on you, so only give it to Her and not to anyone else.”

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī continued, “Don’t give it to anybody except to our Mistress, so many sakhīs’ may come in disguise, but don’t give it to them.”

Then Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī returned the ankle bell to Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu.

Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu returned to his bhajana-kuṭīra. Once there, he had the darśana of two very beautiful girls at his door. They asked him, “Have you found any ankle bell.”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu told them he had found it.

The sakhīs asked, “Can you show?”

When Śyāmānanda Prabhu showed the ankle bell to them, the sakhīs said, “At once you have to hand over the ankle bell to us, otherwise you will be caught red-handed and be brandished as a thief. It belongs to our sakhī. We are newly married gopīs, so if you refuse to give us the ankle bell, we will go tell our husbands of your thievery, and you will be beaten.”

But Śyāmānanda Prabhu was adamant, he said, “I will only give this ankle bell to its rightful owner.”

The sakhīs said, “Then we are going and telling our husbands of your obstinacy. They will come, beat you, and give you a good lesson. You are a vairāgi-bābā and you want to see ladies? Is this the dharma of a brahmacārī? You have left your home and everything, but now you want to see a newly married kiśorī- gopī?”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu said, “You can abuse me and have me beaten also, but I will give the ankle bell only to the rightful, same lady whose ankle I will tie it to with my own hands.”

Anyhow he was not ready to return it to the sakhīs.

The sakhīs said, “Acchā, we will go and bring our sakhī who lost Her ankle bell.”

After some time, they returned with a very beautiful sakhī. But She had dressed Herself in an ordinary way. She came and told Śyāmānanda Prabhu that the ankle bell is Hers and that Śyāmānanda Prabhu could tie it to Her ankle. Śrī Lalitā and Viśākhā added a condition that Śyāmānanda Prabhu could only tie the ankle bell to Śrīmatī’s ankle blindfolded.

They said, “You can only see Her blindfolded, She is unseen by anyone.”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu said, “Yes you can bind my eyes, but only I with my own hands will tie the ankle bell to Śrīmatī’s feet.”

Śrī Lalitā and Viśākhā fastened a black blindfold around Śyāmānanda Prabhu’s eyes so that he could not see anything. After that the sakhī came who the ankle bell was intended for and She said, “The ankle bell belongs to Me and you can return it to Me.”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu said, “I wish to tie it to Your Lotus feet. I will not give it in Your hands.”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu wanted to take the lotus footdust of Śrīmatī Rādhikā.

Śrīmatī Rādhikā began to smile and replied, “Acchā, you can tie it to My ankle.”

As Śyāmānanda Prabhu began to tie the ankle bell around Śrīmatī Rādhikā’s lotus feet, he caught hold of Her feet and held on. Śrīmatī Rādhikā said, “Now that you have tied the ankle bell, you can let go.”

Śyāmānanda Prabhu replied, “Only when You give your darśana will I let go.”

[Śrīla Gurudeva and the devotees laugh]

Then for a moment which seemed for eternity, Śyāmānanda Prabhu’s blindfold was unfolded and taken out and he had the darśana of his Svāminī.

Śrīmatī Rādhikā said to him, “Your name will be changed now. You cannot be known as ‘Dukhi (unhappy) Kṛṣṇa dāsa’. From today, I Myself am changing your name to Śyāmānanda dāsa.”

Śyāmā means Śrīmatī Rādhikā. One who serves and makes Śrīmatī Rādhikā happy is known as ‘Śyāmānanda dāsa’.
Śrīmatī Rādhikā told Śyāmānanda Prabhu that in his mañjarī svarūpa as Kanaka Mañjarī he is one of Her main pālya-dāsīs.

Śrīmatī Rādhikā smeared the ankle bell with Her kājjala, and made it shine. This shine was forever. With this shine, She made a permanent ankle bell sign on his forehead.

They (some devotees who doubted Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu) tried so much to wash away the ankle bell sign off of Śyāmānanda Prabhu’s forehead. They used endless quantities of water, but they were unable to do so. It remained.

To this day the Vaiṣṇavas of Śrī Śyāmānanda Prabhu’s line apply the same ankle bell tilaka. So from now Dukhi Kṛṣṇa dāsa became known as ‘Śyāmānanda dāsa’.

Devotee: Śrīla Gurudeva is making a long flower garland with the flower like hearts he has collected to offer to his Lordships Śrī Rādhā Vinodabihārījī.

On hearing a devotee explain to him that some meetings have been held by certain devotees to discuss Śrīla Gurudeva’s preaching to Śrīla Svāmī Mahārāja’s disciples, Śrīla Gurudeva said:

They are holding so many meetings only for me; they are thinking, “What to do? What to do?”

Devotee: They are like Ajāmila always chanting ‘Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa’, so they will get great benefit.

(Laughter)

Śrīla Gurudeva: Wherever I preach, I preach by the mercy of our Guru-varga.

Devotee: Śrīla Svāmī Mahārāja also used to always say that his only qualification was his unflinching faith in his spiritual master and guru-paramparā.

Devotee: So you are going now to Australia, Malaysia, and so many places.

Śrīla Gurudeva: I don’t know. I will only go if the devotees drag me there. I was in Vṛndāvana doing bhajana but for your sake I came here.

Devotee: You are bringing to us Vṛndāvana.

Devotee 2: You will take us to Vṛndāvana.

Devotee 3: Actually you are not out of Vṛndāvana, you just moved here and brought us to Vṛndāvana. That’s why the devotees are so happy when you come. The devotees in Hawaii were having some problems with their temple president, so they were thinking to fix the problems as early as possible and they said to each other, “If Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja would come here to Hawaii, everyone would go to him, and so we should fix the problems immediately.”

(Laughter)

Devotee: One devotee wrote to me that she realizes how successful Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja’s preaching is because it has caused so many talks within a certain society. “The papers, emergency meetings, and phone calls are testimony to Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja’s success in his preaching tours”, the devotee wrote to me.

Devotee 2: Many of us who are Svāmī Mahārāja’s disciples would have never have imagined in a million years that we would join an organization with strict rules and regulations. We were like śaivites, in the sense that we had long hair and even smeared ashes on ourselves sometimes. Most of us were smoking, having come from a hippie background. To join organized religion was not possible for us. In this country they make a joke that, “Whoever dies with the most poise, wins the game’, people have so much attachment for money and buildings.

Devotee: Death can snatch everything away from one in a moment.

Śrīla Gurudeva: I have not come to take anything; I have only come to give. I don’t want anything; I only want to help all progress in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

Devotee: We are going to miss you so much. The last time I was with Śrīla Prabhupāda was when we were in Jagannātha Purī and Bhuvaneśvara in 1977. We were together for a short time before Prabhupāda left us. Prabhupāda took us to many different places, but one stop was your Guru Mahārāja’s maṭha. We went to Śrīla Keśava Mahārāja’s maṭha and did saṅkīrtana there. That to me is a sign that we should meet together at that place.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Very good.

Devotee: Can we board now?

Devotee 2: Yes.

Śrīla Gurudeva: My heartly blessings to you all, I hope we all can meet together very soon in Murwillambah or Holland.
