Pariksit Maharaja said, “My lord, You have mentioned the pumsavana-vrata. Please now explain it in detail for I understand that it is very pleasing to Bhagavan.”
Sukadeva Gosvami said:

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: A woman, following the orders of her husband, should start this vrata, which can fulfill all one’s desires, on the first day of the waxing fortnight of the Agrahāyaṇa month. Before beginning worship of the Lord, the woman should hear the story of the Maruts’ birth. Under the instructions of qualified brāhmaṇas, she should clean her teeth, bathe, and dress herself with white cloth and ornaments in the morning before taking breakfast, and then engage in the worship Lord Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī.
alaṁ te nirapekṣāya
pūrṇa-kāma namo ‘stu te
[She should then pray to the Lord as follows.] My dear Lord, You are full in all opulences, but I do not beg You for opulence. I simply offer my respectful obeisances unto You. You are the husband and master of Lakṣmīdevī, the goddess of fortune, who has all opulences. Therefore You are the master of all mystic yoga. I simply offer my obeisances unto You.
“O supremely respectable Lord, you have all power, beauty, and energy—these are Your opulences. You can also grant these opulences to anyone you like. You are present always with Maha Laksmi. You are satya sankalpa. You are the master.” Glorifications such as these should be offered to the Lord. She is to pray like this.
After offering pranama and prayers to Narayana, she must do the same to Laksmi-devi. She should pray, “O you who are dear to Visnu. You are as glorious as your husband. O mother, o sakti of the Lord, I offer pranam to you.
oṁ namo bhagavate mahā-puruṣāya mahānubhāvāya mahāvibhūti-pataye saha mahā-vibhūtibhir balim upaharāmīti; anenāhar-ahar mantreṇa viṣṇor āvāhanārghya-pādyopasparśana-snāna-vāsa-upavīta-vibhūṣaṇa-gandha-puṣpa-dhūpa-dīpopahārādy-upacārān susamā-hitopāharet.
“My Lord Viṣṇu, full in six opulences, You are the best of all enjoyers and the most powerful. O husband of mother Lakṣmī, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, who are accompanied by many associates, such as Viśvaksena. I offer all the paraphernalia for worshiping You.” One should chant this mantra every day with great attention while worshiping Lord Viṣṇu with all paraphernalia, such as water for washing His feet, hands and mouth and water for His bath. One must offer Him various presentations for His worship, such as garments, a sacred thread, ornaments, scents, flowers, incense and lamps.
haviḥ-śeṣaṁ ca juhuyād
oṁ namo bhagavate mahā-puruṣāya mahāvibhūti-pataye svāheti
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: After worshiping the Lord with all the paraphernalia mentioned above, one should chant the following mantra while offering twelve oblations of ghee on the sacred fire: oṁ namo bhagavate mahā-puruṣāya mahāvibhūti-pataye svāhā.
If one desires all kinds of opulence he must daily worship Laksmi-Narayana with the above mentioned process.
Offering pranam, one should chant the above mentioned mantra ten times and then pray as follows:
O Lord Maha Laksmi is Your sakti. You are the Supreme Lord among lords. You are present in the heart of the bhaktas. By Laksmi devi’s mercy this sacrifice of mine will be successful. Laksmi-devi bestows opulence but good qualities. When those things received from her are offered to Sri Hari by the jivas, then she becomes happy. It is the business of demons to take her blessings and run away to try and satisfy their selfish desires with them. A person who does this will suffer birth after birth.”
Daily worship Srinivasa and Laksmi-devi in this way. After puja, distribute the prasada to the bhaktas and brahmanas. Then prepare for further worship.
By being chaste and following this vrata, everything in a wife’s life will be sweet. If a husband follows this vrata he will also be happy. If the wife cannot follow this, the husband may follow for her. It is best if they both follow this vrata. Prasada must daily be distributed after the puja, otherwise the sadhana will be useless.
The performers of this vrata should, after following the regulations for a year, fast on Kartik Purnima completely, and then, after the proper execution of worship to Bhagavan on the next morning, they should offer ksira to the Lord. Then they should give prasada to the bhaktas and brahmanas and ask for their blessings in prostration. When they are all pleased and have eaten, they should accept the remaining portion.
Good children, fame, an opulent home, and all kinds of opulences become easily available to the follower of this vrata.
Diti followed this vrata and became pure at heart, had qualified children, and lived a happy and peaceful life.
