[Excerpt from Srila Gurudeva: Around the World, U.K. 1996 (Radlett, 22 May), the second book in a series of volumes on Srila Gurudeva’s world preaching tours.]

I never wanted to make disciples since I joined the Matha. My Guru Maharaja told me, “I am making you the Acarya of the Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti.” But I refused. They should not be discouraged. But some discourage others. So they should be pleased and if anyone feels that I am making disciples then they should ask me. I don’t want to bring even a little pain to their hearts. But they fear me. They are listening to me; I don’t want them to fear from anything. If they come to me, then I think their fear will go. And if I have done any service to Svamiji, they should have honor for me. If a dog of Svamiji comes, then I think the dog will be respected.

So, they should think, “Anyhow, Maharaja has served Svamiji in the beginning. And he has served him in the last also.” I gave Samadhi to Svamiji.

Sripad Madhava Maharaja: For the Bombay court case, Gurudeva would go at 6:30 a.m. and he used to return at 8:30 p.m. I would send prasada for Gurudeva in the morning.

Srila Gurudeva: I went without any intention of gain. Everyone was telling me, “You should not go.”

But I said, “Svamiji has ordered me to go so I must follow his order.”

But they have forgotten all these things. I don’t understand why they fear and why they are doing so. I am the same person as I was when I was serving Svamiji and I will continue to be the same person. I will never do anything against Svamiji or ISKCON. I am a follower of ISKCON; I know that I belong to ISKCON because Svamiji has given this right to me. But I don’t know why they speak like this. It may be that by some of my activities they think that I am against Svamiji. But my mood is to solely serve Svamiji. So you should request them to not fear from me. They can meet me and we will see that everything will be solved. They have no different Krsna or Gaudiya line. The disciplic order is the same. Svamiji has written the disciplic line. Our main principle is the same. We are following Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Srila Prabhupada. We are following the same line. So why should we quarrel?

Devotee: Have some of their dealings been hurtful to you Maharaja?

Srila Gurudeva: They may cause problems, but I don’t take them into consideration. I know that they have told their disciples to not see me. They say, “Maharaja should not go to America. He should not come here.” I have heard from Gopala Krsna. He told me, “The chairman has prohibited you.” The gurus have warned all their disciples to not see me. They can do all these things; I think it is no problem.
