[Lecture by Srila Gurudeva, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja]

Śrīla Gurudeva: Jagadīśa Mahārāja will speak something. We all want to hear him.

Jagadīśa Mahārāja: Mahārāja, they get enough of me.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Anything. Glorify Svāmījī.

Jagadīśa Mahārāja: Please speak Mahārāja.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Anything.

Jagadīśa Mahārāja: I can say that, personally speaking, I am happy that you have come here to visit us. I know that you are very dear to Prabhupāda. I saw him, Śrīla Prabhupāda, and I saw his affection for you. And, therefore, I would like to welcome you again, publicly, to our Śaraṇāgati community of Vaiṣṇavas. We are doing something here; I explained a little bit to you before, but, we feel a very important part of Prabhupāda’s preaching was to establish the proper type of civilization for fostering the birth of bhakti in the hearts of the conditioned souls. Prabhupāda saw that the civilization based on the machine was destroying the human beings. He, being the compassionate Vaiṣṇava he was, like Prahlāda Mahārāja, he just wanted to see all the suffering, conditioned souls saved from their ignorance and he wanted to give them the mercy of Lord Caitanya. And, so, he published his books and asked his disciples to distribute them in every nook and corner of the world. And then he also asked us to take the teachings from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Caitanya-ciritāmṛta, and put them into life. He said often, “It’s the life that’s important.” So, this Śaraṇāgati village is an effort to put the teachings of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and Caitanya-ciritāmṛta, as they are presented by Śrīla Prabhupāda, into life. And, of course, life comes from the association of saintly persons. So, we are fortunate to have you with us. You can help us to regain our life’s energy through the hearing and chanting of krsna-kathā. So, please give us life.

Śrīla Gurudeva: We know that Caitanya Mahāprabhu took sannyāsa and went to Jagannātha Purī by the order of His mother. And again from there He went to South India. Again He returned and again He went to North India, Vrndavana and so many places. He went to Jagannātha Purī and met with Sārvabhauma Bhattacarya, who was an intellectual giant, especially in māyāvāda. At that time he was one of the most famous māyāvādīs in whole world. So many sannyāsīs used to meet him and take shelter; although he was a family man, but he was so renowned.

He saw that Caitanya Mahāprabhu was a very young boy and He has taken, anyhow, the renounced order, so I should help Him and he told Caitanya Mahāprabhu that, “I want that You should be a bona fide sannyāsī. You are a very little boy, young boy, You may be derailed. So, You should hear some Vedānta.”

Caitanya Mahāprabhu told that, “You are My father’s friend, our forefathers also were friends. So, I am like a son, like a nephew, to you. So, I have given Myself at your lotus feet so you can train Me, I have given Myself to you.”

He began to teach Vedānta, ‘Athāto brahma-jijñāsa. Janmādyasya yataḥ’. And he was explaining in a wrong way. Caitanya Mahāprabhu heard for seven days. He did not speak anything in favor or against. He was silently hearing all these things.

Sārvabhauma Bhattacarya said, “Are you understanding anything or not? I am not anything understanding by Your face. I can read anyone’s face but I am not reading Your face whether You are understanding all the explanations that I am giving. But I am thinking nothing. If You are not understanding You can ask me and (I will) answer. And if You are understanding something then You should do like this [Śrīla Gurudeva makes motion]: ‘Very good, yes, yes, go on.’ But You are not telling anything so I am not understanding whether You are understanding or not.”

He told very simply, “The Vedānta-sūtra you spoke was composed by Vyasadeva. When you explain, I think that you are making clouds to cover the sun of the proper meaning.”

He was astonished, “I am not telling right?”

He told that, “I think like that you are covering the real meaning of Vedānta-sūtra.”

“Why?”

He told that, “Everything is clear from the Sūtras that Parabrahma has shape. He has so many powers; so many attributes; and He is all powerful; He is an ocean of rasa; He can do anything He like; a person cannot do like this but He can do everything. In a moment so many worlds He creates. And in a moment He can destroy all and He can do anything. But you are telling that He has no shape, no color, no attributes, no śakti, He is nirvisesa; arūpa, arūpa meaning ‘having no shape.’ Nothing. He has no qualification. Even He is not so merciful to anyone. He has no mercy at all. He is like zero.”

“Yes, I am explaining.”

“And it is true.”

He told that, “It is not untrue because it appears from the sūtras that Kṛṣṇa has said. He is Krsna. He has so many attributes. All worlds are created by Him and are merging by Him and at last they will enter in Him. So, if He is doing all these things He must have any shape. He must have some desire. He must have some attributes, powers, and energy. So, why you are telling like so?”

He gave so many Veda ślokas. He spoke so many philosophical arguments. Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya became full of wonder. He could not speak anything and he fell flat on the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, “Oh, this young boy—who is He?”

At once Caitanya Mahāprabhu showed him the form of Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, and Mahāprabhu at the same time. Six-handed. In two hands bows and arrows. In two hands flute like Kṛṣṇa. The shape was Kṛṣṇa, but two hands of Rāma, two hands of Kṛṣṇa, and two hands Mahāprabhu, with daṇḍa and kāmaṇḍalu.

He saw this. At once he fell flat. And he told that, “Now, you should listen. I was doing wrong. I am seeing that He has shape.”

God has shape. G-O-D. G-generator. O-operator. And D-destroyer. Everything He is. I am really seeing. [unclear 14:44] so merciful and every quality He possesses; but not worldly.

And he fell and surrendered himself in the lotus feet of Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Mahāprabhu told that, “Don’t tell these things to anyone. I have to do so many things.”

Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭacarya thought that, “Oh, He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead,” and he took shelter.

He also went in Kāśī and he turned all the Kāśīvaśīs, around 60,000 sannyāsīs, and they took all shelter of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and whole Kāśī became Vaiṣṇavas.

He saw the state of living entities in this age, and thought, “Here the philosophy of Vedānta will not help.”

He began to chant:

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

In a very simple way, very simple. Whether he has so many so many requirements. He is always in sense gratification. One may be foolish, or learned, one may be woman, young boy, or old person, Hindu, Christian—anything. Even animals and trees and creepers, and ant even. But, by hearing this holy name, by chanting this, surely they will be very good devotees one day and they will know kṛṣṇa-tattva, jīva-tattva, māyā-tattva, everything in good association, Vaiṣṇava association. Those who chant, those who only chant knowing nothing, after some time they will be [unclear 18:38] and Kṛṣṇa will Himself arrange the association of śuddha-vaiṣṇava devotees. Very soon. So, he preached everywhere.

So, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, the Saptama Gosvāmī, Seventh Gosvāmī, after the six Gosvāmīs, and his son and disciple, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Ṭāhkura Prabhupāda, he used the same method; and he preached everywhere he went.

He preached by starting nāma-haṭṭa everywhere. No philosophy—because they will not understand any philosophy—but they should be helped. So, he began chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa… village to village—everywhere. He sent his one hand to Western countries and that hand was Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Svāmī Mahārāja, so powerful person. I have come only to see how splendid, how marvelously, and how magically he has turned the whole Western countries. I am seeing here, [unclear] “Oh, it has become like Goloka Vṛṇdavana.” He has made it. [unclear] He has done miracles. I am seeing so many devotees. I am glad to come here and to see the magic of Svāmījī. I have come here to only see. I have not come but I was dragged by Svāmījī because he has ordered me when he was coming first to India that, “You should join me. I will be so happy if you’ll come and help me.”

Though I could not come by body, by mind I was serving him. From India I used to supply his orders like sending mṛdaṅgas, sending karatālas, sending Deities of Radha-Kṛṣṇa and Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and Nityānanda Prabhu. So many. I sent his books, everything. I helped as much as I could have done. I helped so much. In the last time also he called me. [unclear 22:19] At that time GBC was established. All were there but especially he called for me. I went. He has so much faith in me. I have served him without any gain. That gain was that, “You should take me to Kṛṣṇa.” That gain was there. So, he knew me, perhaps. My heart was pure. So, he told me that, “You should give my samādhi with your own hands. I know that you’ll do with proper Vedic culture, ślokas and mantras, everything. You know, you are qualified in all these mantras. And doing all these things, you should also manage my viraha-mahotsava.”

Perhaps this Mahārāja was there. And we all took him, his transcendental body, all over Vṛndavana. To Radha-Damodara temple, Govinda-Gopinatha, Madana-mohana, Śyāmasundara, Radha-Ramana, Gokulananda, [unclear] and also to Radha-vallabha. Everywhere with very good kīrtana. And we returned and we made a hole in the earth according to the rule and regulations. We gave bath with Yamunā water and wrote so many māntrās [unclear 24:16].

After that, the Viraha-mahotsava was nicely done. And all the prominent Vaiṣṇavas of Vṛndavana were called and they were honored and they glorified Svāmījī. He told also that, “You should help to my boys to whom I have accepted as my sons and disciples. I know that you are qualified for this.”

I told him that, “I am your śiṣya, disciple, I always know that you are my śikṣā guru. Not less than dīkṣā-guru, so I must carry your orders on my head.”

Then he became so happy. So, he has told that, “You should come.” So, after 18 years I am coming. Only to see and pay my respect to the lotus dust where he has put his lotus feet. He came in New York, to any garden or beach, park, where he first took his karatālas alone. He wrote me all these things.

śrī kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda
śrī advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

The devotees began to come surrounding him and in very few years he spread his mission all over world. So many temples; so many big books…granthas…granthas meaning…?

Audience: Books.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Books like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam translation, purport. Caitanya-caritamṛta purport and meaning word by word. Everything. Gītā was translated so nicely. So many books he wrote. Only they have to do something more but his master called, “At once, come on, come on, and serve Me. I cannot live without you.”

So, he told, he wished, that some things which I could not complete here, my all devotees should complete this. So, if he was here he could have translated Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam in full. Translating and giving Bhakti-rasamṛta-sindhu, Ujjvala-nilamaṇi and all the books of Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī and all our disciplic ācāryas. From top to bottom especially our Gosvāmīs up to Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Śrīla Prabhupāda; but in a short time he could not do all these things; but he has given so much treasure and amṛta…?

Audience: Nectar.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …nectar. He has kept in his…what box?

Audience: Iron chest.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Iron chest. That is in his books. But any general person can not know deeply the real meaning. So, the key is with very bona fide Vaiṣṇavas. So, we should go:

yāha bhāgavata paḍa vaiṣṇavera sthāne
ekānta āśraya kara caitanya-caraṇe
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā 5.131

[If you want to understand Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, you must approach a self-realized Vaiṣṇava and hear from him. You can do this when you have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.]

Go to any bona fide Vaiṣṇava who is rasika: [unclear]

He knows all the Vaiṣṇava philosophy, bhakti philosophy, especially prema philosophy. You should go and read his books. I am going to keep all these things, but under lock and key. When you will be mature then any bona fide Vaiṣṇava will give the key in your hands then you can unlock and you will see that everything is here. Especially:

anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ
jñāna-karmādy-anāvrṭam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu
śīlanam bhaktir uttamā
Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.1.11

[The cultivation of activities that are meant exclusively for the pleasure of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, or in other words the uninterrupted flow of service to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, performed through all endeavors of the body, mind and speech, and through the expression of various spiritual sentiments (bhāvas), which is not covered by jñāna (knowledge aimed at impersonal liberation) and karma (reward-seeking activity), and which is devoid of all desires other than the aspiration to bring happiness to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is called uttamā-bhakti, pure devotional service.]

What we are doing in the beginning? First karma. Only for us. The fruit we will taste. This is karma. But karma-yoga is superior than this. Doing anything but we offer it to, the fruits and the karma, offer to Kṛṣṇa. Then it becomes karma-yoga. [unclear 29:52] Karma adding to bhakti. Then bhakti and karma-yoga that is mixture of bhakti and karma. What is this?

yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi
yaj juhoṣi dadāsi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tat kuruṣva mad-arpaṇam

Bhāgavad-gītā 9.27

[O Kaunteya, whatever activities you perform, whatever you eat, whatever you sacrifice and give in charity and whatever austerities you perform, offer them all to Me.]

What you are doing the fruits should be given to Me. That is karma-yoga:

yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra
loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ
tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya
mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara
Bhāgavad-gītā 3.9

[Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage.]

What yajñārthāt? Yajñarthāt meaning Kṛṣṇa Himself, Viṣṇu Himself. So, yajñārthāt, what is yajña? For the benefit of Kṛṣṇa, you should do. Whatever you do, do for the benefit of Kṛṣṇa; then you will be happy. This is karma-yoga. And to know more. More. More. You should go and surrender yourself:

tad viddhi praṇipātena
paripraśnena sevayā
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ
jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ
Bhāgavad-gītā 4.34

[Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.]

You should go to the persons who are realized. Who are tattva-darśinaḥ—means knowing all tattva: jīva-tattva, māyā-tattva, kṛṣṇa-tattva, bhakti-tattva, everything. There. Go. Don’t first question them. Go and serve them. First, first you should do praṇama [unclear] means…?

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: Prostrated.

Śrīla Gurudeva: With this, this, this, folding. Like wood. I am giving myself to you in your lotus feet. Be merciful to me. And then, have any question for him. Tell him that, “If I am qualified you can answer, otherwise not. So humbly…[break audio]…and answer him and crush all my doubts.”

[break audio]…then Kṛṣṇa told him, “[unclear 32:29] so go to sarva-darśī, to tattva-darśī, like Kṛṣṇa and His associates. They will wash your all doubts: who are you? Why you have come to this world? Where to go? How to be happy? They will tell you; if you are serving.”

They will tell that, “Oh, you should chant:

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

…and if you want to be bona fide then you should take shelter of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He has come. He is Himself Kṛṣṇa but taking the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. So, Kṛṣṇa mercy and Rādhā mercy both combined, Caitanya Mahāprabhu has come to this world. Only to bestow His mercy. Causeless mercy. Never wants anything in repay. Never He wants. Without any repay He wants to give mercy. Not only mercy, the pot in which mercy will come. Prema with pot. Kṛṣṇa did it. He gave to others but He could not give pots. He used to tell that, “You should bring your pot and how much your pot is capacity to keep it, I will give.”

ye yathā māṁ prapadyante
tāṁs tathaiva bhajāmy aham
mama vartmānuvartante
manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ
Bhāgavad-gītā 4.11

[O Pārtha! In whichever way a person renders service to Me I serve him in that very same way. Everyone follows My path in all respects.]

“What is your qualification, I will give that thing. But I cannot give less or more. Very little more.” Like balance. But Caitanya Mahāprabhu told, “Whether you have no pot, come to Me. Come on, come on to Me.”

He gave also pot. He gave qualification. What qualification? That anyone has not done. Any one has not given prema to plants, trees, creepers, ants, and animals. Like Him. Who can do like Caitanya Mahāprabhu? Only taking Gaura-Nityananda, Gaura-Nityananda. Only chanting this.

Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa…He gave His mercy. Gave His pot also that. [unclear 35:22]. Oh, everything with Kṛṣṇa’s mercy. All kinds of vraja-prema. Caitanya Mahāprabhu has bestowed this mercy only one time in Brahmā’s…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: Day.

Śrīla Gurudeva: …day. Brahmā’s day. Rāma cannot give this. Kṛṣṇa cannot give like this. Varāha, Nṛsiṁha, Kalki, Jagannātha-deva, Dvārakādhīśa, Mathurādhīśa: They cannot give this thing what Caitanya Mahāprabhu…(has given). So, I think that Svāmījī has come with this mission of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. No philosophy at all in beginning. No philosophy. Only mahā-prasādam with ‘Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa’.

Anyone come on and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, and give them so much mahā-prasādam; very delicious mahā-prasadam. Mahā-prasādam distribution, and first chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. All that. Gathered so many devotees and after that gave also mahā-prasādam. What? Gītā, Bhāgavata, and all books for distributing. But, I am telling you, first see what is nectar in this book. What is this? So, if you are so good to distribute then you will have to drink some nectar from those books and should realize that, “Who am I. Why I am distributing books?”

We are not booksellers. We are the booksellers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, of Svāmījī. What is in this? First see, let us see, that what is in this. And then you can do more…?

Audience: Effectively.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Effectively. And if you are not seeing yourself then after several years you will distribute four lakhs, three lakhs, four lakhs, ten lakhs of books and after you will see, “I have gained nothing. No money, nothing. Then I should make share. 50/50. Or 75 for me and 25 to that trust, Bhaktivedānta Book Trust.” And at last he will go to hell. He will give up all these things and go here and there. So, see and try to drink a drop of that nectar what is in these books and if you trust even then you will be bona fide. Never give up Kṛṣṇa consciousness [unclear 38:40].

Karma, karma-yoga, jñana, jñana-yoga and all kinds of yogas, then bhakti-yoga will come and he will realize…what is the śloka?

Audience: Yogīnam api sarveśam…

Śrīla Gurudeva:

yogīnām api sarveṣāṁ
mad-gatenāntar-ātmanā
śraddhāvān bhajate yo māṁ
sa me yuktatamo mataḥ
Bhāgavad-gītā 6.47

[He who constantly performs My bhajana with full faith, always thinking exclusively of Me within himself, is, in My opinion, the topmost of all yogīs.]

He will realize this fact himself. That, of all kinds of yogīs, those who are serving from heart, chanting, remembering, doing all these things always, whatever he is doing only for the benefit of Kṛṣṇa [unclear 39:29]. Then, in no time, he will be bona fide Vaiṣṇava and he can preach everywhere in world. He is jagad-guru. Then kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, all kinds of vega, they will all be conquered. There will no anything here. Our hearts will be pure and advanced in kṛṣṇa-prema, vraja-prema.

And not [unclear 40:00] no stopping heaven, brahmā-loka, then Vaikuṇṭha. No stop. Crossing. Like a [unclear 40:15] crosses. Even Rāma-loka, Ayodhyā-loka, after that he will go to Goloka, crossing all, entering in Kṛṣṇa-loka, crossing first Dvārakā, crossing Mathurā and he will come to Gokula, and from Gokula he will come to Vṛndavana where rāsa is going on; all gopas, gopīs are serving Kṛṣṇa. In different ways especially in three main ways: sakhya, vātsalya, and mādhurya. Sakhya—like Subala, Sudāma, Madhumaṅgala, taking their remnants and putting it in the mouth of Kṛṣṇa.

“Oh, how sweet this is.” Kṛṣṇa, “Oh, I should take the remnants of Subala, Śrīdāma, Madhumaṅgala. Oh, very sweet. Very sweet. Oh, your mother has prepared so much so.” Sometimes quarreling and defeating Kṛṣṇa also. Kṛṣṇa defeated in moment Kamsa. And Śrīdāma and Subala were wrestling with Kṛṣṇa for hours and they were not—Kṛṣṇa was not defeating them and He was not defeated.

Once, Śrīdāma took Kṛṣṇa and fell flat on the…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: …on the ground…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …earth. And Kṛṣṇa was defeated like nose up side. Then Subala told, “Remember always that I am more powerful than you.”

Kṛṣṇa said, “How you are powerful?
“I am powerful?”

Kṛṣṇa said, “No, I am powerful.”

“I have defeated you.”

“No. I am not defeated. See whose nose is up. Because my nose is upper side and your nose is…

Audience: …down…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …so, you are defeated.” So, laughing, making laughs. Moreover, vātsalya, Yaśodā. She is serving Kṛṣṇa like a very [unclear] boy. Kṛṣṇa can not turn here and there. He can not take Himself from the breast of Yaśodā. He can not move. He can not run. And Kṛṣṇa is nourished by Yaśodā. She bound Kṛṣṇa. Never He was bound by anyone but Yaśodā, in a moment, she bound Kṛṣṇa. And then He goes to gopīs; then gopīs say, “Oh, bring your father’s shoes, the sandals of your father.” And Kṛṣṇa takes it. Being naked and takes the shoes and laughing and smiling, “Oh, my father’s sandals.” And He goes to gopīs then gopīs used to give some laḍḍu.

After this. Go on more. Like Rāya Rāmānanda and Mahāprabhu: Mahāprabhu, “Go on. Go on. Go on. Go on.” He said, “Oh, there are not many in this world that they can question like this. So, I sense that You are Himself Kṛṣṇa and are cheating me.”

Then he told that, “What You are inspiring me I am telling the same thing.”

He told that, “Above this vātsalya-rasa, that is the loving affection mood of Yaśodā. After this, crossing this also, you should go to gopīs. They have more affection, more something. Yaśodā cannot serve Kṛṣṇa like them. Yaśodā has husband. Yaśodā has also Baladeva and all the family works she has to do. But gopīs have left everything. A mother, at first she has only one husband. She should give her full [unclear] to her husband; but when the child was born then that love was divided into…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: …two…

Śrīla Gurudeva …two. One for her husband, another for her child. Again two children were there. Then divided into three. One for her husband. One for each child and for householding works—so many divided here, here. But all the gopīs were kiśorī like Lalitā, Viśākhā, Citrā, Śrīmatī Rādhikā, all. All prema was for Kṛṣṇa. They have no child at all. Their husband is only show bottle. Nothing to do with them. Everything was for Kṛṣṇa. So, Kṛṣṇa at last said:

na paraye ‘ham niravadya-samyujam
sva-sadhu-krtyam vibudhayusapi vah
ya mabhajan durjara-geha-srnkhalah
samvrscya tad vah pratiyatu sadhuna
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.32.22

[“I am not able to repay My debt for your spotless service, even within a lifetime of Brahma. Your connection with Me is beyond reproach. You have worshiped Me, cutting off all domestic ties, which are difficult to break. Therefore please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation.]

Means? “I cannot repay you in lakhs and lakhs of births. I cannot repay you because if I will tell that, ‘I want to please you, to repay you, so, you should tell what you want.’ Then they will say, ‘We want to serve you.’ And if I am giving service again I am going to be na paraye ‘ham.” Kṛṣṇa cannot repay them. Gopīs will tell that, “We have given everything for You so You should give everything for us.”

Kṛṣṇa cannot do because He has so many devotees, lakhs and lakhs…

Śrīpāda Mādhava Mahārāja: …innumerable…

Śrīla Gurudeva: …innumerable. He has to go also to Mathurā. He will have to go to Dvārakā. So many friends, so many devotees. So many. He will have to go to Ayodhyā. So many devotees like Hanumān, Bharata, [unclear 47:00], Sītā. And also He will go to here in Vaikuṇṭha, now there is Jaya, Vijaya, so many. Each was there koṭi koṭi—lakhs and lakhs worlds everywhere there are devotees. Some are kaniṣṭha, some are madhyama, some are uttamā, but He will have to go there. So, He can not give like His whole heart. So, He is telling that, “I am always indebted to you, always indebted to you.”

So, Kṛṣṇa says, “I am defeated by you.”

And gopīs saw this and heard this, they told that, “Oh, You have conquered us. We are defeated. Because You are the Supreme and You are telling that, ‘I am defeated.’ This Your defeated words have defeated us.”

So, this object of this our whole devotion, to have that mood. The object of our…first we should decide our object of our life and then practice. What is practice? And try to learn the meaning of:

anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ
jñāna-karmādy-anāvrṭam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu
śīlanam bhaktir uttamā

…from Jagadīśa Mahārāja. He is so bona fide and he will teach you what is that thing.

Śrīla Gurudeva: My puṣpañjali, offerings, to my Gurudeva’s lotus feet, also to my śikṣa-guru Śrīla Svāmī Mahārāja. Like Kṛṣṇa is everywhere, so, I think that same mountain area, here he is, Los Angeles. West. East. North and South. Everywhere, in every corner in whole world he is. Like Kṛṣṇa has manifested he has manifested himself. Here, there, everywhere in the hearts of His devotees, everywhere he is. So, you should not think that he has gone forever and he is dead and he cannot come and he cannot help. Don’t think like this. He is eternal. His everything is eternal. His all actions are eternal. His devotees are eternal. Their all souls are eternal. Then we will see that this world is Goloka Vṛndavana. Everything.

So, Gaura Premānande!

Śrīla Gurudeva: I am glad to come to you and see so many devotees, real devotees, here. So, I am fortunate to see the glories of Svāmījī here. And I have come only to respect and to offer my puṣpañjali to the lotus feet of Svāmījī and see his glory, how glorious he is.

hare kṛṣṇa, hare kṛṣṇa, kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa, hare hare
hare rāma, hare rāma, rāma rāma, hare hare

Devotee: I understand that Kṛṣṇa is manifesting everything in a personal way. This is a correct understanding? Or is there such a thing as impersonal? Or is everything a person?

Devotee: Is it right that everything is personal? Or is there something…?

Śrīla Gurudeva: And then it becomes nirguṇa because we are not seeing from the eyes. We are not having any sense of all these senses. It is beyond all these things. It will be only seen by soul and it will be pure. So, it is called like so. But first person. And that person is Himself Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa has so shape? God has no shape? That even in Bible and Koran we see that God created man after his own image. If He has no image how He can do like Himself? So, His body is like Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is Supreme Personality of Godhead. If He has no merciful then how He can give mercy to all? If He has no quality at all, impersonal, He cannot do anything. He has no power to manifest, that nirguṇa. He cannot do anything. He is like zero. But how from zero this world can come? In seed everything should be there. We see that a seed is given in earth and everything comes—it’s leaves, branches, fruits, everything is there. But we are not seeing at that time. So, when we are not seeing we are realizing Him, then we are telling that, “Oh, He is impersonal.” But actually He is Person, Himself person. All bodies are there. All shapes are there. Everything is there. So, in Puraṇas also it has been told: [unclear 54:39]

Allah made all these persons like Himself. If Allah and Buddha have no shape, how it was created? So, from whole thing all things have been created and whole thing is Himself Kṛṣṇa. Anything cannot be created from nothing, zero. Nothing can be. So, Kṛṣṇa is all shapes, all qualities, everything in person. If He is impersonal He cannot do anything. He cannot reflect also because shapes can be reflected. Nothing is there. [unclear 55:30-55:35]. If He is zero we can not realize anything. From where we have?

oṁ pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idaṁ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate
pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate
Śrī Īśopaniṣad

[The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains perfectly complete.]

He is full. Everything coming from Him is also full like Rāma, Balarāma, Nṛsiṁha, all. And in the end they will mix together. [unclear 56:06-56:23]. So, Kṛṣṇa He is like this. He was part and parcel there never can be God Himself. So, we must serve. You see, you can take an example. That if you throw any stone from here and there is nothing upside then it will turn up. It will come back. It will be returned. But if anything is there it may stay there. But everything will come down? Why? You will tell that, “According to the law of gravitation it will come to Earth.” But you should understand, if you make a fire the flames will go towards Earth or it will go up? Where it will go? Can you say? Not understand?

Audience: Up?

Śrīla Gurudeva: Why up? Why gravitation of law not implied to that it should go down towards Earth? Why it is going up? If you have a balloon and air tight then it will go up. Why? Air is not fire, water is not part of Earth. So, all the parts should go to their own home. So, anything from Earth, coming from Earth, they will come to Earth; they are bound to come to Earth. And, the part of fire, anything, belongs to sun part and parcel, they will go towards sun. The air will go to air. Water will go to sea. Anyhow. If a drop will fall it will evaporate and go to sky, again by raining, everything. It fell more it will go to any place, one nali nali…

Audience: Drain.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Drain. From other drains to other rivers and from river it will go to again sea. So, we are all part and parcels of Kṛṣṇa so we must go there. Otherwise we will not be happy. So, we must serve Kṛṣṇa. We are part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. Not of this Earth. Not of anything air, sun, we are not. If we are not serving…you see the potency of serving Kṛṣṇa is there but we are not. Any bona fide guru and he will preach all these things and serve Kṛṣṇa and we will go to Kṛṣṇa and serve forever. No birth, death, sorrow, sufferings. Anything. No problems there.
